Computer won’t turn on

When the power button is pressed, the power light doesn’t turn on/computer doesn’t turn on.

Not enough power

First, try plugging the computer into the wall socket, making sure that the socket provides power. If, after a while of charging, the computer still doesn't turn on, try the following solutions.

Battery is not fully connected

The battery may not be making proper contact in the socket. See the guide on Replacing the Battery to ensure that the battery is installed correctly.

Battery needs to be changed

You might need to replace the battery. See the guide on Replacing the Battery.

Computer turns on but will not go to Windows

The computer will turn on but fails to load Windows

Windows settings changed unexpectedly

This works if computer hangs during the Windows boot screen. Hold power button until computer powers off. On next boot the option to launch startup repair should be available in a screen before Windows tries to boot. Allow computer to run startup repair completely.

Windows installation is corrupted

This requires a Windows reinstall/repair. It can be done by getting the installer for the version of Windows on the computer then following their steps to reinstall Windows using your computer’s current license.

Screen is no displaying properly

The screen will not display properly, either the image is distorted or the screen is blank.

Computer is in standby/hibernation

Press the power button briefly to exit standby/hibernation.

Display is set to an external device

If you have an external device, such as a desktop monitor or a TV screen, connected to your computer, then the display might be set to show on that device. To change display settings, press fn and f4.

Display is damaged

This is a last resort or you know that your screen is physically damaged, ie cracked or not displaying correctly. Please follow our guide on screen replacement.

Touchpad not responding/too much response

Using the touchpad doesn’t move the cursor on the screen, cursor is too responsive to touchpad.

The touchpad may be disabled

Sometimes the touchpad will be disabled when an external mouse is detected. To solve this, use the external mouse to re-able the touch pad.

The touchpad may have not started correctly

Sometimes the touchpad cannot start up if it is touched during startup. The solution is to reboot the computer and do not touch the touchpad until computer is fully booted.

The touchpad is dirty

Make sure the computer is off, then wipe gently.

Keyboard is not responding

Not responding to keyboard commands.

Keys are sticky

Make sure computer is off and battery is unplugged. Gently remove problem key with a butter knife and clean area with a q-tip and alcohol. Re-install key after alcohol has evaporated.

Keystrokes are not detected

Somes the keyboard does not fully start up. If this is the case, allow the computer to fully boot. If problem persists, ensure that internal keyboard is enabled. If problems still persist, the keyboard may have failed and needs to be replaced. See our guide on keyboard replacement.

Keys are missing or damaged

Sometimes keys can be damaged or come disconnected and lost. Single keys are hard to obtain. The best solution to this issue is to replace the keyboard with a new one, see our guide on keyboard replacement.

Computer too hot

Computer is running hot and possibly overheating

The computer’s ventilation ports are blocked

This computer has ventilation ports on the front, bottom, and sides. If these are covered, the computer can not properly cool itself. Move computer to a flat surface and ensure nothing is covering the bottom, front, or side ventilation ports

The fan is clogged

Over time, dust can build up inside the computer and block the internal fan. This requires opening the computer and cleaning the internal fan. See our guide on heatsink removal and replacement.

The fan is dying

The fan has a limited lifespan. As it continues to age it will push less and less air. Sometimes a fresh fan is what your computer needs to keep cool. An easy way to tell is if the fan is making noises such as a whining or grinding. See our guide on heatsink removal and replacement.

The heatsink thermal paste is aged

Over time, the thermal compound used to transfer heat from the computer to the heatsink and age and stop working effectively. This can cause the computer to overheat because it can't dissipate the heat as it was intended. Turn off computer and remove battery. heatsink removal and replacement.

Computer won't connect to wifi

Computer is unable to connect to the internet through its wireless adapter

User or password is incorrect

Many times the password entered is case sensitive. Double check that the correct password was entered

Wifi adapter may be disabled

Sometimes the wifi adapter is turned of by a user. To reenable it, go to "Network and Sharing" then click "Change adapter settings". Right click the wifi adapter and ensure that it is enabled.

Wifi might be inaccessible

Ensure that other devices will connect to the same wifi. If other devices will not connect, first try to troubleshoot the network itself.

A reboot may be necessary

Sometimes simply rebooting the computer can do a lot to remove issues with internet connectivity.

The wifi adapter might have gone bad

If your wifi adapter has failed you may need to replace it. Some signs that it has failed are, the adapter may not appear in device manager or is completely unresponsive after a reboot. If your adapter has failed, follow our replacement guide on replacing your wireless adapter.
