Background and Identification
12” laptops like this XPS 12 9Q23 are very small laptops. Because of their size, they don’t have space to hold a large processor, and are therefore usually less powerful than larger computers. On the other hand, they are extremely light and easy to carry around. Overall, 12” laptops are most commonly used by people who need to carry their computer around often, but who don’t need to do intense work with it.
The XPS 12 is a 2-in-1 laptop, meaning the screen can flip 180 degrees to operate as a tablet or as a traditional laptop. This computer is unique in that the screen is hinged in the middle of the lid rather than the bottom, which still uses standard laptop hinges. The result is that the screen appears to be floating in its aluminum "halo", much like the Dell Inspiron Duo released 2 years prior.
The XPS 12 9Q23 and 9Q33 are notorious for defective displays that leak liquid crystals, leading to screens appearing to have water damage when in reality, the problem is far worse. The problem was resolved in their successor, the XPS 12 9250, although its display is not compatible with earlier models as Dell opted for a detachable screen in the 9250.
To identify what model of XPS 12” laptop you have, you can press F2 at powerup. This should bring up the model number of your computer. Alternatively, if you open the aluminum flap on the bottom of the laptop, you can find the Service Tag number, and enter it or the model name into this Dell Support page to confirm the model and get other support from Dell.
