The Circle Pad Does Not Move Smoothly

The circle pad (analog stick/joystick) is too loose, does not return to center, is difficult to move, or does not move at all.

Debris is Obstructing the Circle Pad

If the circle pad is sticky or hard to move, there may be debris lodged within. Follow the guide to remove the circle pad in order to check for any debris that may be causing the issue. Debris can be safely removed with compressed air or a cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol.

Defective Circle Pad

It is possible that the mechanisms inside the circle pad have broken. If this is the case, you will need to replace it. See the circle pad replacement guide.

The Console Will Not Power On

The Nintendo 3DS XL will not power on.

Drained or Faulty Battery

If the console will not turn on, it is likely your battery is drained or defective. If charging the device does not solve the problem, try replacing the battery. You can remove and replace the battery by following the replacement guide.

Battery Replacement Guide

The NAND Chip is Failing

If the console will turn on but freezes at a black screen without going to the home menu, it's possible that there's a problem with the NAND chip on the motherboard itself, whether it be a loose connection or just general failure. Replacing the motherboard itself could potentially solve the problem. See the motherboard replacement guide.

The Circle Pad is Not Responding

Nothing happens when the circle pad (analog stick/joystick) is moved.

Defective Circle Pad

If a quick restart doesn't fix the problem, you may need to replace the circle pad. See the circle pad replacement guide.

A Button Sticks or Requires Excessive Force to Press

A button feels jammed. It may be difficult to push, or it might not pop up after being pressed.

Debris is Obstructing The Button

There may be debris lodged in the button. Follow the replacement guide to remove the button and check inside for any debris or sticky substances. Debris can be safely removed with compressed air or a cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol.

The Card is Not Inserted Correctly

Follow the replacement guide to ensure the SD card is correctly inserted. Make sure the spring lock is properly triggered.

Defective SD Card

The SD card or the SD card reader may be defective. Try inserting the SD card to another device such as a computer or smartphone. If it still does not work, you may need to replace the SD card.

Defective SD Card Reader

If the SD card works in other devices, but not in the 3DS, you will need to replace the SD card reader.

Game Card Not Being Read by the Console

The 3DS does not recognize when a game card has been inserted.

The Card is Not Inserted Correctly

Remove the game card, checking for any debris in the reader port, and reinsert the card.

If removing and replacing the game card does not solve the problem, you may have a defective game card reader. Follow the replacement guide to remove and replace it with a working game card reader.

Game Card Reader Replacement

The Directional Pad Sticks or Requires Excessive Force to Press

The directional pad feels jammed. It may be difficult to push, or it might not pop up after being pressed.

Debris is Obstructing The Pad

What if the console powers on but does not charge the battery, although it still works and doesn't drain battery when on charger? (battery's not faulty)

emaN - Responder

Hello @commonusername, if you are experiencing issues while charging your device with a non-Nintendo charger it may bypass the battery and supply enough current to power the device while turned on. While using an aftermarket charger it is possible that the battery will only charge in sleep mode. What type of outlet are you using and what is the power rating of the plug?

My issue is that the 3ds will "turn on" but both screen displays remain black and there is no sound, yet the on light remains blue. No wireless light.

I've heard that a possible reason is a loose or dislodged wifi card. I opened up the back and gained access to the motherboard, yet I can't seem to find a wifi card. Is there on to be found? If so, what am I looking for and where is it?

dewtwo - Responder

I have the same issue, but I have not checked it out yet.

Matthew Barker -

If it's turning on but there's no displays and no sounds and the light remains blue, it's very possible the issue is the NAND chip failing. I fixed a N3DSXL last year with that same issue and replacing the whole motherboard fixed the problem.

Sean Robinson -

The 3ds will no longer turn on after swapping the bottom lcd screen. The blue light stays on for about 3 seconds, but then turns back off(no sound). I'm currently charging the device, but is their a specific ribbon that I may need to take a closer look at?

Brandon Ward - Responder

Mine has the same exact problem, but is much more damaged. Perhaps the ribbon cables are damaged, broken, or are not properly connected? Mine are broken, which would be an obvious cause. Only the red wire remains intact. If there are other wires that are broken or disconnected, that would be the cause.

@tronicsfix,

I really did not want to attempt to get ahold of you this way, but due to the server blocking every other option, I have no choice. This may be marked as spam, and I may lose reputation for this, but I don’t have any other option I can viably use. You may or may not have seen a question I entered into the Answers Forum (Do you have any tips on repairing this device? (3DS))) that gives you a summed-up diagnosis of the problems with this 3DS, hence why I chose here specifically to post this comment, since it is the most relative spot on the site for this. I do want to send it to you, but I live in Kentucky and cannot really afford cross-country shipping fees. Since I hear you specialize in 3DS repair, you’re the one I want to see about this. You do still repair 3DS consoles? If you do, I would like to somehow get it to you for repair. Thank you in advance!

I have a brand new N3dsxl galaxy. However, I stopped using it for 3 months. It was fully charged too. So I went to pick it up and it didn't turn on. I charged it for 30 min and nothing but a red flicker on the power. I re seated the battery and while it turns on, it will randomly turn off. Do I Have a loose connection? I snacked it by accident after re seating the battery and it works for short periods of time

Hi! My New 3DS XL turns off if I move the top screen. What could be the issue? Thanks in advance!

Toni57 - Responder

Are there still sellers for a micro sd card reader? I've tried a different card (32gb) and it still didn't read it. Everything else on it still works fine.

Jeifa Volani - Responder

I just changed my card reader and still can’t seem to card read my ds games
