Laptop is Unable to Boot or Shuts Off Spontaneously

Laptop will not turn on or suddenly turns off.

Black screen

Fix 1: I know it's said about everything, but try turning it off, and turning it back on. It's a classic troubleshooting step because it solves a surprising number of problems.

Fix 2: If the laptop turns back on for a period of time before going dark, try updating your graphics drivers.

This can be done by following this guide, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHcxd2sk..., on your phone or if your laptop's uptime is long enough, on the laptop itself.

Screen is Unresponsive

Step 1: Turn the laptop off and back on by holding down the power button for at least 10 seconds.

Step 2: Plug your AC adapter into a wall socket and connect the charging cable to your laptop's port.

Step 3: If nothing changes, we recommend taking your laptop to a repair shop for further diagnosis of your specific problem. If your laptop became responsive again, the issue most likely stems from its battery. You can either replace the battery yourself or take it to a repair shop and pay them to do it for you. If you do decide to replace it yourself, it needs to be a battery of this type:

You can then watch a short YouTube video (link below) on how you go about swapping the batteries out, as we do not cover that on this page.

Becomes Unresponsive During Use

Step 1: Restart your laptop by holding down the power button for at least 10 seconds, then powering it back on.

Step 2: Check to see if a specific application is causing the issue. You can do this by bringing up the task manager by pressing ctrl+alt+delete and selecting task manager from the options presented to you.

Step 3: If the task manager did not pop up, you may need to "factory reset" your Acer laptop. Be warned that a factory reset will completely wipe your laptop of all stored data and reset it to the state it was when it was first bought. You can find a video on just how to do this here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhU7B0Rj...

Laptop Power button is Lit Up but Displays a Black Screen or is Locked into a Static Image

Laptop is unable to execute actions from the keyboard or mouse.

Display Issues

Step 1: If it's not already, power off your Acer laptop. Do this by holding down the power button for 5-10 seconds and this should give the system a chance to fix itself.

Step 2: Locate the HDMI port on the back of the laptop

Step 3: Plug your HMDI cable into your secondary display and Acer laptop.

Step 4: Turn your Acer laptop's power on and see if your display is responsive again, or if your secondary display is working as intended. If neither work, then there is a hardware issue with your Acer laptop, and we recommend taking it to a shop for repairs.

Step 5: Try plugging the charging cable into the laptop

Step 6: Press ctrl + alt- Del to see if that gives way to any solutions

Step 7: Check other areas of computer hardware to see if any issues are present.

Laptop is Functioning Slowly

Laptop is executing slowly from boot or after extended use.

Slow performance Right after Boot

Fix 1: Try turning off some apps from starting up after booting the device up, this can be done by opening up the windows Settings > Apps > Startup and turning off some unnecessary apps from opening.

Fix 2: Try updating your hard drive type and checking what apps are running.

Slow performance During Extended Use

Fix 1: Try restarting the device as something may be running in the background.

Fix 2: Clean up your hard drive as junk files tend to overfill it and make the device run slower than usual.

Laptop Battery Rapidly Loses Battery Power

Laptop will lose its charge during limited use.

Rapidly loses charge without extended use

Firstly, to understand the severity of this problem you will have to create a battery report from the laptop to see the specs of the battery, usage, and overall health of the battery.

To begin creating a battery report you first need to right-click on the start button of your taskbar and select Windows PowerShell (Admin) which is a free application installed on every windows device by default.

Once you've allowed the application to make changes to your device when you open the application you must enter or (copy and paste) powercfg /battery report /output "C:\battery-report.html" into the blue field and hit Enter on the keyboard.

Lastly, the application will let you know what the new HTML file is called and where it has been stored (likely your C: drive) so you can access the file and view information about your battery.

If your report states that your battery has issues with things like maximum charge capacity vs design capacity, low battery health, a close expiration date of normal battery efficiency, or an outdated unit then you need to replace the battery to resume normal functionality.

If the battery report shows that there are no abnormalities with your battery, then you likely have too many resources running for the laptop causing lag and stress on the CPU which results in higher battery usage.

Type "Resource Monitor" in the search bar in order to understand what applications are using memory and how much memory they are using.

Laptop Overheats Frequently

Laptop internals heats up rapidly with or without extended use.

Overheats when in Use

If the laptop reaches dangerous heat levels when operating the device promptly check where the heat is strongly radiating from. If the heat from the device is coming from the bottom of the laptop, then it means it's coming from the battery, otherwise it should be coming from the screen.

If it's the battery that is overheating, you may need to replace the battery as old batteries will completely lose their stability from years of use and naturally must be replaced

If the screen is overheating, then you should promptly check how much memory your device is using by:

Open the search bar and type "Resource Monitor" in the bar and click on the application. This program will display all applications and programs using memory and how much memory they are using.

Applications and programs can be closed from Resource Monitor, or some directly closed from alt + tab via the keyboard.

Ceases Function when it becomes too hot

Just like other devices laptops will promptly shut down when becoming too hot for the safety of the device. If you reside in a naturally hot area and use the laptop outside this could happen and is completely normal. Make sure to work in areas with cool temperatures for extended sessions of use.

If the laptop shuts off from the heat in naturally cool areas, then refer to the above section for more information on how to solve this problem.
