My Gameboy advance SP LCD Ribbon socket black bracket is broken.

The black bracket that holds the LCD ribbon cable for the screen was very worn and broke after cleaning. I'm not experienced with soldering. any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Dr. Mario,

Obviously you know the best way to fix this is to replace the ZIF connector on the board. Given your admission regarding soldering, we know that's not a DIY solution that'll work for you - to be honest I have reasonable soldering skills but I doubt I'd tackle that repair myself. So as far as replacing it, that pretty much leaves you with taking it to a repair shop that can do it for you.

Next best option is to replace the latch. You said it broke, so I'm assuming it's unusable; correct me if I'm wrong. If yours is indeed broken, you'd have to find a replacement, a task that may in itself be difficult or maybe even impossible; some of them are readily available but others can't be found for love nor money.

That pretty much leaves you with my last option, that of kludging together a fix that'll hold the ribbon cable in the connector. Let's look at how that works. The function of the latch is to put pressure on the underside of the ribbon where that white plastic is and press it up against the metal fingers on the inside top of the ZIF connector. Without the latch, the pins don't make a solid enough connection with the cable to work reliably. So we need some way to replicate the function of the latch to make a good connection.

My best suggestion would be to take a thin piece of plastic, maybe something like a plastic package or a plastic playing card and cut it to the same width as the ribbon cable. What you'll need to do is to hold the plastic on the bottom of the end of the ribbon cable and carefully and gently force the two pieces into the ZIF connector. The increased thickness will provide the pressure to provide a good connection between the ribbon cable and the pins inside.

You may have to experiment with different thicknesses of material to find one that is thin enough that you can get both it and the cable into the socket, but thick enough to provide the pressure on the bottom of the cable for good contact.

I'm sure others will have suggestions of their own so I hope you find a solution that will work for you.

Best of luck on your repair; let us know how it goes!

I will try looking for a replacement part to the best of my ability. I will try your method if I cannot find one around the internet. Thank you, Jerry, for your response. I will definitely let you know about this mini project.
