How to diagnose a failing component on a motherboard?

Dear all,

Recently I inherited this laptop. The problem is that when I boot it on, there are two beeps on loop and the laptop didn’t boot on. According to the Dell website, those beeps mean that there is no ram installed. I tried with some different RAM sticks among the other RAM slots, but there is always two beeps no matter what, so I imagine that the problem is on the motherboard.

I have a multimeter at home, but I have no clue how to diagnose the motherboard to find the component that is failing.

Can anyone give me some advice?

Hi @acallejp_97 ,

As you said a 2 beep error code is no ram or faulty ram.

If you have tried known working compatible ram modules and it still fails then perhaps the first thing to check is if there is voltage being applied to the ram slots so that they can function and communicate with the chipset.
The schematics show that the ram slots are tied directly to the chipset. (See block diagram on p.1 of the schematic, linked below).

Given how close together the contacts are in a ram slot, initially it may be safer to test that the ram voltage supply is on the motherboard before checking to see if it appears at the ram slots. (see p.48 and p.96 for further information about 1D35V_S3 & DDR_VREF_S3 voltages)
