Why does the planetary unit fall out?

The planetary unit falls out of my mixer. Nothing seems to be securing it. I can push it back in but it won’t stay.

There is what is called a set screw that holds the cap in place. this has probably backed out enough,. usually this is a HEX key and you just need to retighten it.

No set screw is visible. Where could I find it? The planetary unit appears to be a friction fit.

Maybe newer units have the set screw. Mine is 10 years old. Thanks

Did you ever get a response. We have one that's 6-7 years old. Pro 620 limited edition.

There is no set screw on a Professional 600 mixer.

@bjmg check to see if your unit still has the retaining clip and/or the pin to keep the planetary gears in place. Check the attached manual and see if that is consistent with your unit. Also, see if you have a proper model number on your unit so we can try to identify anything that might be specific to your mixers gears.. KitchenAid Planetary Gear Repair

Thanks for supplying the manual. I forgot to my bad. And yeah that's the pin or screw i was taking about.

Also sometimes I've seen them just a friction fit. Did you try a rubber mallet and tap it down?

If neither are helpful you can use CA glue or tightbond red or purple to seal cap on

I, too, have a pre-2005 KitchenAid 600 Series Professional mixer and the same thing happened to me yesterday. There is nothing inside the mixer that seems to hold the planetary in. The top of the planetary has a lot of little grooves that appear to possibly hold the head in by friction. After spending some time finding a place for it to easily slip in (testing fit as I slowly turned it) I found a place where it slipped in easily. Before I rocked it in, I applied food-safe grease to all the gears. I then pushed it in and gave it a few taps with a rubber mallet to make sure it was seated. It seems to be working fine, but I will update if something else happens.
