Hi Kevin,
Sorry to hear about your Mac overheating! Fortunately, this is a very common issue among many Mac users and there quite a number of discussions on the forum regarding possible solutions. In order to best solve your specific situation, it would also help if you could provide a bit more context information regarding the 2015 Mac and the conditions it has recently been exposed to.
Did your Mac experience any repairs or modifications recently?
Have you had any software updates recently?
Has the computer experienced any physical or water damage recently?
Where do you regularly operate the computer?
Does the computer overheat and shut down immediately or is it a gradual process?
If you could maybe answer these, or provide some additional info, it would definitely help narrow down what the specific issue is with your Macbook and how to fix it.
That being said, first try resetting the SMC on your Mac and see if that produces any results.

If no results, the problem may be due to the heat sink and thermal paste in your computer. I have provided several links concerning similar situations and you are more than welcome to search our answer forums for the solution. That being said, the more context information that you can provide regarding the product and the product issues the quicker we can identify the problem and work towards the solution.

has little water damage on the keyboard
Based on my experience with overheating MacBook 12” is because the GPU issue when using Safari but other funky issue is because trackpad cable needs to be replaced. Once I replaced it, never overheated anymore. Weird.

What are you doing when this happens? Does it throttle down in speed first?

@mayer, Please forgive me, I mistakenly or unconsciously wrote "my" on my question. It is the girlfriend of a relative’s computer. I posed a number of questions in a text to them and am waiting answers. I’ve done some research and I don’t see anything really posted about this model’s CPU or I imagine intel GPU getting hot. A lot about the charging circuit, and a bit about losing 20Vdc and corrosion. I am amazed that Apple would build a computer without a fan, as we all know Macs get Hot!
I agree with your perspective on your profile page. "Continual learning is the equivenlant of daily exercise for our muscles. It keeps us healthy and highly functional. I ran the electronics dept for a huge test lab for Gov’t and NASA projects, qualification and failure analysis, SO I have electronics background. Thank you for your amazing history, knowledge, and wisdom with the Apple ecosystem. My hat is off to you. You’re the kind of person I would seek out, if you didn’t live in Baja Oklahoma:), lol.
