Start by removing the lockset from the door, or packaging. Separate and set aside the interior half of the lockset.
-
Hold the lock so that the side with the keyway is facing directly away from you.
-
Locate the driver bar on the back of the exterior, or keyed, half of the lockset. It is the long cylindrical post that protrudes from the back of the lock and is hollow on the end.
-
Insert the cylinder removal tool into the end of the driver bar and turn until the tab (circled red) is in the twelve 'o clock position.
-
-
-
Using the edge of the cylinder removal tool, depress the tab from step 2 while removing the driver bar.
-
Make sure the tab from step 1 is completely vertical and pointing towards one of the threaded cylinders. It can easily shift out of position, preventing removal of the driver bar.
-
Rotate the entire assembly 180 degrees so that the keyway faces the ceiling. While depressing the tab from step 2, wiggle the entire lockset. The driver bar should slide right out.
-
-
-
To rekey the cylinder, simply dump the bottom pins out of the plug and replace with the appropriate sized pins for the new key.
-
Ensure proper operation by reinserting the plug into the cylinder and rotating it to the 9 'o clock and 3 'o clock positions, taking care to make sure the plug does not accidentally come out of the cylinder.

Millions of Kwikset Smartkey Locks Vulnerable to Hacking, Say Researchers "Locks that are used in millions of homes and residential buildings worldwide and that are designed specifically to thwart hacking are easily opened with both a screwdriver and wire, two researchers say" what you recommend?
Wow, I had no idea it could be so easy! Re-keying a lock used to be so intimidating and seemed like it would take a long time and be expensive. But this looks like it makes it really simple and quick! Thanks so much for sharing, I'll have to try this!
I must say you have illuminate the complete process of Re-key. thanks for sharing this wonderful information.
Thanks for explaining these steps for Lock re key, I really appreciate your efforts and wish you luck for more amazing work in the future.
Confirmed this process works on Honeywell/Hyman Inc sold as Altas Home Security doorknobs at Menards and Lowes.
Good explanation. If you don't have the special removal tool, you can turn the driver bar with a #2 Phillips. Its hard to get the cylinder ro disengage without the removal tool, but it can be done with two jewelers screwdrivers. And finally, you dont need a rekey kit if you have a spare unused Kwikset key (I keep my unused keys for rekeying.) Just take out the pins using a follower as described. Then insert your new key. Look for pins from the old key that work with the new key. I can almost always get 4 pins to work. (Or use pins you kept from discarded locks.) 4 pins isn't the end of the world. If a crook can pick four pins, a fifth pin won't keep him out.
