If the light bulb inside the hood of your whirlpool microwave (model WMH31017HB) is not working or has been broken, use this guide to replace the damaged lightbulb with a new one. This guide also works on the other following models of the whirlpool microwave. These include models WML35011KB and YWMH31017HB.

The lights on the hood are essential, especially during nighttime, as it helps the stove area to be brighter for those who are cooking when it is dark. Working without hood lights is difficult as usually in a kitchen the lights that are made to see the stove clearly, are the ones installed in the microwave range hood.

Before using this guide, inspect the bulb through the lid to check to see if the bulb has shattered, as this can happen often. A shattered lightbulb is a bit more dangerous as the user has to ensure no glass falls down as they open the lid.

Before beginning, make sure that there is no food on the stove and the stove is cooled down and empty.

Ensure the underside of the hood is clean, and that there is no oil on it.
To remove built-up grease, you can use dish soap and a sponge.
Make sure there is no food on the stove.
Have the range hood lights on, as you need to be able to see everything.

Gently unscrew and open the hood panel that is covering the lights with a screwdriver.

Slowly pull down the lid of the light box.
Beware of any shattered light bulbs. To be safe, place a newspaper or a towel under, on the stove. As this catches all the glass and prevents any injuries.

Turn the lights off.
Wait to ensure the lightbulb is cooled down.
Do not touch the lightbulb as soon as you have turned it off; it is extremely hot.

Use a towel to unscrew the light bulbs clockwise from inside the hood or if it is cooled down completely you can use your bare hands.
If the bulb has been shattered, ensure that you are twisting the remaining parts carefully. Watch for sharp ends.

Check the information on the needed light bulb, then purchase a new one. The bulb is 40 W.
Often there is a sticker attached to the bulb with the information.
