In the middle of using ipod, screen went blank, not black. Low battery message had not appeared. Cannot shut off/on at all, not recognized when connected to my desk top. Not sure what the problem is so cannot decide if any of your solutions are for me.

Try holding the home button and the power button at the same time till the apple logo appears. Then let it boot and then power off as normal and restart.
post back results for additional ideas/advice if required

Thanks for the possible fix! I will keep it in mind. As it turned out, I left the ipod alone for a few hours, and when I next picked it up the screen had gone black, indicating to me that the battery life had died..when I pressed "home", the low battery picture arrived and I recharged as usual and things are working well. Your idea would be much faster!
