If your violin is not producing the desired tune due to a loose string that will not tighten despite adjustment, use this guide to fix your loose violin peg.

Each string on the violin is attached to a peg that allows you to tune it. If your string is continually loose, then a loose peg is the issue. Rewinding the string completely and administering peg compound ensures the correct position to hold the peg in place in order for your violin to fully function. Using one of these methods over the other can also serve as a solution; however, it is best to do both.

    • Completely unwind the string affected by the loose peg.

    • Turn the peg clockwise for strings G and D and counterclockwise for strings A and E.

    • Slide the peg out towards you to remove it from the pegbox.

    • The pegbox contains the holes that the pegs go into.

    • Locate the points on the peg that come into contact with the pegbox.

    • Reinsert the peg by pushing inwards.

    • Turn the peg counterclockwise or clockwise to evenly distribute the compound.

    • Wipe away the excess compound that is outside of the pegbox with a cloth or paper towel.

    • Locate the hole on the peg and insert the string through it.

    • Tightly angle the string away from the peg head with one hand, while turning the peg toward the scroll with the other hand.

    • The scroll is the woodcarving at the top of the violin.

    • After one or two turns, angle the string toward the peg head (vertical alignment).

    • Tune the string.

    • For strings A and E, tightly turn the peg clockwise, and for strings G and D, turn the peg counterclockwise.
