@samuelwforlines just to clarify. It smokes when you first start it but not after that? Does it do that every time or only if your car has been off for awhile?

por

Seems to do it after it sit awhile and stops after it warms

@samuelwforlines

Are the engine oil and coolant levels remaining within their limits or is one or the other indicating that it is less than it was?

What colour is the smoke?

por

@samuelwforlines how does it perform, runs normal? Any other issues with it or just the smoke? What does your coolant look like? Also, check your plugs and see what those look like. Blown head gaskets etc. do not get better when you drive and you would have that smoke at all times. That would be the last one on my list to check. Rule everything else out first. What's your climate like? Cold and freezing or hot and humid?

Before you go chase this down: If you are in a cold climate a lot of Subaru engines give off white smoke briefly -- but never long, shouldn't be longer then 1-2 minutes. Anything longer is bad. Also check to see if the oil is overfilled - if it is, drain it - but check on a flat surface and not a hill like a driveway.

White tends to be a bad head gasket but it also can be the PCV valve. I would check the PCV valve for oil clogging it, or just replace it being such a cheap part. That said: Subaru was known to blow the head gasket for years - but it mostly impacts 2010 and older and it's always the EJ25 engines. 2010-2011 is better, but it still can occur with high miles on the EJ253, while 2012+ all but fixes their head gasket issues since those went to a different engine code which fixed everything for good (FB25).

The good thing is once you swap to the MLS gasket on the EJ25, they almost never fail again as long as both surfaces are clean and it is torqued right -- the updated part number for the non turbo (EJ251/3) is 11044AA642

That said, confirm the symptom first with a kit like this IF the PCV valve does not help: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F1GFD9HK/ -- if it changes color the gasket is bad.

Without the year we can't help you find parts, but search your model year and head gasket or PCV valve: Subaru Forester head gasket [engine displacement] non trurbo
