Help me diagnose iPhone X Face ID move iPhone a little lower

Hi! I have an iphone x with face id and selfie camera portrait mode not working. For the moment I don't know if any of the internal components were changed or not.

Here is what I know:

  • face id fails to detect a face during the setup process. Keeps sending the two messages: move iphone a little lower/higher
  • Animoji works ok though
  • Flood illuminator also works as I can see it with an older camera
  • Proximity sensor and autobrightness are functionally
  • Attention thing works (when picking up the phone it turns display on if it detects any human face)
  • Front camera works (without any blur) aside from the portrait mode (It says move further away and only takes a normal photo)
  • Back camera works ok, portrait mode is functioning
  • Phone has liquid indicator turned red (unfortunately I haven't saw this before buying it)
  • The phone seems to have been opened up before as the adhesive was loosen whet I opened it up.
  • I have tried to clean the dot projector and the infrared camera along with the lens on the front glass but without luck
  • I have tried also the DFU restore, and every type of reset
  • Iphone is running ios 12.3

My question is that if the display is changed without transferring the other components from the glass assembly, will iphone send the faceid unavailable error or it could just never let you setup it like in my case?

Has anybody been able to repair an iphone x with these symptoms?

Thanks a lot!

I have the exact same problem too and the local technician told me it cant be repaired. I suspect it’s the dot projector that is faulty/blocked I wanna be sure before I open the phone up.

Any advice?

por

Same issue...just randomly quit working and when trying to reset it doesn't appear to have the ability to recognize or record my facial features. It just keeps asking me to move the phone up & down with my face 10-20 inches from the face-block. Super frustrating b/c I take good care of my stuff so there is no reason it shouldn't work.

por

Same here - higher lower 10-20 inches but everything else works. WTH

por

I was having this issue...just kept telling me to move iPhone higher/lower. I just cut it off for about 30 seconds and powered it back on and it set up fine. Mine only did this after I erased my original Face ID I had set up and tried to reset a new one. It’s working now...good luck!

These are @%^$$@$# &&^&^$^ people of IPhone . I am sure iPhone is make fool of people . I am also facing the same type of issue . What is the resolution . Please help here

I have yet been able to find a solution to the problem, but I have found a fairly definitive way to test for the issue.

Answer to your first question: If an LCD is changed and you do not swap the components on the LCD, Face ID will error out when you try to set it up. It will also tell you that Face ID failed to initialize when your phone first boots up.

To answer your second question there is a lengthy explanation, but I will try to keep it short.

I made a compilation of images including using the image provided by iFixit. The iPhone X flex has a proximity sensor (Red circles) and Flood Illuminator (Orange Square) - The second flood illuminator is with the camera assembly, but it won’t turn on until it starts to “record” your face.

I have found that the flood illuminator on the flex will not turn on for phones that have an issue with recognizing your face. This is where it will say “move your iphone higher, then move your iPhone lower” over and over again without ever successfully recording your face.

You can easily test this issue by using another phones camera to able to see the infared lights. Compare to the image below.

Bottom Left - Functional Face ID. You can even see two Purple dots through the LCD, so you don’t have to take apart a phone to test this issue.

Bottom Right, only the proximity sensor IR LED is working. Face ID will not work.

I have yet to find a way to fix this issue. If someone else finds a fix, please post!!!

9/13/2021 UPDATE

There are a couple companies that advertise being able to fix this problem, but it looks like a very lengthy and risky process. One company is JC Programmer. You would need to get your hands on the following…
https://www.jcprogrammer.com/v1s-4-in-1-...
https://www.jcprogrammer.com/jcid-face-i...

Or the other company is QianLi in which case you would need to also get similar items. Here is a link to a tutorial video on how to do the repair. It looks pretty extensive.
https://youtu.be/cTo8CZRClTw

This is assuming you have original parts. This will not work if the serial numbers don’t match (check with 3u tools).

Hi @macalegin ! Thanks for sharing your experience!

From this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PV7JMZzz... it seems that if you replace either the front camera assembly or the earpiece flex you will end up with the same symptoms as in my case.

So you one could tell if an iphone x has any component related to face id replaced?

I have added in my question a photo from the sensors while trying to configure face id. It seems that only the proximity sensor is staying on and no signs of life from the flood iluminator.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the link.

To answer your question of whether you can find out if components have been replaced…

I recommend using 3U tools. http://www.3u.com/

Whether to fully trust this software on a personal computer is another question, but this tool is loaded with features including a full report showing if parts are original or if they have likely been changed.

Mine is exactly the same and battery is starting to go. Surprise, surprise, my contract is up this month!

por

This tip was the solution to my problem! Thanks to this diagnosis I was able to verify that the infrared beam I was seeing was from the proximity sensor and not from the Flood Iluminator.

Before, I thought the Dor Projector had burnt out, even though I've only changed the Flood Iluminator. So I redid the Flood Illuminator and it worked!

Just turn off the iPhone completely, then turn on again. Go to setup and it should work. Modym02

Thank you. Sometimes, we miss the basic troubleshooting step. Just by rebooting the phone and this issue was gone. I was able to setup the faceID

por

Doesn’t work for me. Tried this twice

por

I was also facing the same problem. When I was trying to reset the face id, it was asking me to move the face a littel higher. Then after reading the reviews, i just switched off my i-phone and again switched on. This really worked and I was able to reset my face id. It is working fine. Thanks

Ir camera,Flood illuminator, front camera both are necessarily need from the same like fingerprint .

Apple encrypt this all to compatibility for only one iPhone.

Hi! I know this. My question is if you change any of these components will the phone send you a message saying face id is unavailable? Or it can also have the symptoms that I have described. I'm trying to figure out if I still have the original parts

por

Mine is doing the higher lower thing I’ve been talkin to Apple support for two days now they basically said they can’t help

por

Same for me. I haven’t called Apple but my facial recognition quit working so I deleted it and when I tried to reset it just says move lower, move higher.

por

In had the same problem. I went to apple and they gave me a new phone. It is a known problem. Go in and get it tested, they will swap it out, but just make sure you’ve backed your phone up.

Actually the most likely reason is the dot projector.

The DP has some kind of active optics in front of the IR/laser chip, water or impact may have damaged them and you may need to find a way to separate the optical block from the silicon part and solder a replacement module on. The chip beneath the DP must stay intact because that part is paired to the phone.

This is another kind of microsurgery difficulty level repair. People can do this won’t charge for cheap even in China.
