@gxlpe that could be a shutter problem as well as a failed CMOS sensor. Since we do not know what the shutter count on your camera is, the shuter may just have been "wore out". The life expectancy for the shutter for the Rebel T3 is ~100,000 shots. Here is the [document|39737] for your camera  since no service manual appears to be available. It will at least give you an idea where the shutter assembly is and what it entails.
