You need a Mini-DVI adapter. Depending on your monitor, you'll need a Mini-DVI to VGA adapter ( http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9320G/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU1MzA ) or a Mini-DVI to DVI adapter ( http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9321G/B?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU1NjQ ).
Generally speaking, older monitors require the analog VGA connection while many (most?) newer monitors use the digital DVI connection.

If you're not sure what kind of monitor you have, here's a pretty good picture showing a VGA and a DVI plug -- the VGA is on the top. http://shop.vetcosurplus.com/catalog/images/dvifemale-vgamale.jpg Check the sockets on the back of your monitor to compare the shapes to see what kind of plug they require. Some monitors have both VGA and DVI plugs. In that case, I'd recommend going with the DVI adapter for better image quality.
