The very first thing to do it to back up your data. Sounds like something is burning out and you need to try to locate it before it goes completely. This machine can go out at any second. Can you tell where this surplus heat is coming from by using your palms? Is the machine shutting down on its own? Are you getting any screen distortions? Any sounds other than the sizzling? Any clicking? Does it boot as fast as it normally did?

It the same except for the heat and the sizzling. There no other sound beside the humming noise and the heat is near the handle on the back.

What if i just leave it alone? Will something happen?

That is a tough one. It is possible that nothing is going to happen, or it is possible that one you hear a popping noise, a big stink and your computer will stop working. So, just like mayer originally suggested, make sure you back all your stuff up and do that on a regular basis. Good Luck.

I am not a Mac person, but my suggestion for the humming noise without any other issues would be the possibility of a faulty power capacitor or/and a bad failing transformer. Be careful with this computer, the CRT is a different beast and unless you know what you are doing, chances of getting zapped by high voltage is easily possible. Take a look on here to download the iMac service manual and take a look at the power and video board. If you are really ambitious, check on here for a repair. This should be taken as informational only, working on a CRT can KILL YOU. Hope this helps, good luck.

nicksmacandpchelp, that is good. You shouldn't unless you have had experience with it. Stay safe.
