In terms of the fit, I’ve got some information on this. On these Dell laptops that use the internal softcell battery tend to come from the factory “compromised” with a 56Wh pack unless you only rely on an M.2 SSD. The bay design does not allow you to fit a 2.5” hard drive into the machine unless you also downgrade the battery. It was a big deal just a few years ago but IMO with how cheap M.2 SSDs are now it’s not as much of an issue if the laptop supports NVMe - but if you want a cheap ass storage upgrade path you probably don’t want to install one of these packs.

Note about mSATA systems (Usually Haswell/Broadwell): if you have one of these and choose to eliminate the second drive you will need an mSATA SSD. If you have a 2.5” drive it's highly advised to keep it since mSATA is a normal SATA drive with zero benefit other than size with a horrible downside in the form of a reduced max TBW lifetime rating. For those setups where NVMe cannot be used stick to the "compromised" battery.

If you want dual drives, you’re limited to 56Wh packs. The 84Wh pack requires an M.2 SSD as the sole drive - NO additional secondary will fit. It isn’t shown on one of my usual sources, so YWMV. Buy it from a reliable source who has a solid return policy or stick to the 84Wh pack if you want to be safe - 10Wh isn’t going to make enough of a difference you’ll notice it day to day.

Hi. Well i have the 56wh battery and i have the 2.5” hard drive ssd drive and a 32gb m.2 cache drive that came with the dell xps laptop years ago. Of course the 32gb m.2 is basically useless. That is why im planning to get a 1tb m.2 nvme ssd and remove both the 2.5 inch ssd and the 32gb m.2 nvme ssd... that way there is enough space to put the bigger battery. Also is removing the bay easy to do or not?

Yea there is no point of a dual drive. I had no idea it came with it that way when i bought the laptop years ago. Well Im curious why there isn't a set answer on this... such as would a 97wh battery work on the xps 15 9550. Yea i know 84wh to 97wh isn't that big... but I just want to get the biggest battery there is since it wouldn't cost that much more... then it makes sense to do so.

I read on reddit and forums a few ppl said the 97wh does work on the 9550. Majority of people don't have a clue. I'm not sure if I read much about people say it doesn't work. So thats why i wanted to know answer.

@Roger Bailey When you bought it, COST. Big issue then, but we're at a point within a few years the cost issue is a null and void "problem" if you were loaded enough to buy an XPS a few years ago - especially with the InfinityEdge display.

If you can afford the original sticker price of the XPS - or the used resale you can afford the 512GB/1TB NVMe SSD.

I bought this xps actually on ebay years ago new... not from dell. But i had no idea the xps 9550 came with two different batteries depending on your configuration. So my first time getting a replacement battery years ago... this was another 56wh... i was shocked because i had no idea there was a 84wh battery option as well but i couldn't get that since i had the 2.5 inch samsung ssd as my main hard drive etc.

I have the normal display... i dont want infinity edge b/c it uses too much battery.

@Roger Bailey I see - I didn't know Dell sold these without the InfinityEdge option. Yeah it's affordable enough I'd probably dump the 2.5" parts in one of these myself now if the pack died, but leave it if it works. As to what you do I'd keep them just in case.

Okay im not sure 100 percent with the infinity edge option.. but the one i have is the regular hd display 1080p and 1920x1080 resolution. So i assume the infinity edge you mean 4k display right? All i know is my monitor is the regular display screen... which is what i prefer.

So in my situation now, you suggest ordering the 84wh then right? Whether its from them, ifixit or parts-people... etc? Since im getting a new ssd ... m.2 nvme ssd... i see no point of getting another 56wh battery.

But if you had to take a guess... what percentage would you say the 97wh they sell actually works on the 9550? They told me their batteries come from south korea so that is where they are made.

Roger Bailey “ifixit batteries are made by ifixitthemselves right” I am certain they are not. iFixit will get battery that have been manufactured to OEM specs and they stand behind their products. You are not going to get a better warranty or support than you do on here. We are not going to make any recommendations for any other seller since they are available on Fixit. If they wouldn’t be, we could easily do that but as our host it is only fair to recommend the products from here first. Ultimately you can purchase from whomever you are comfortable with and whatever you can afford. I purchased from the seller you mentioned, before and had no issues with it at all.

I mentioned to the laptopbatteryexpress rep, I read online the 97wh model 6GTPY works with the 9550 because I read on forum other users said it does but also... on ebay... one popular seller sell the exact model for the 9550 and even the seller of that battery on ebay tells me its compatible with the 9550 since i see lot of people bought from that seller.

This is what he tells me

The xps 15 9550 uses many different batteries and are not interchangeable. The battery used varies based on when it was ordered and what configuration it shipped and NOT THE MODEL NUMBER ALONE. You can't go based on what other people used in theirs, you need to go based on what your laptop has in it which is a 4GVGH 84h battery.

Now can others confirm this statement? I never heard of that before but that sounds very interesting. So the model number is not what you are suppose to look at but what configuration the battery was shipped in? I have never heard of that ever.

Also why ifixit not sell 97wh?

@Roger Bailey As long as the voltage and BMS play nicely, it tends to work. For example I can get an E6430 battery "fit" in my E6440 with no modification, but the system board throws a tantrum since Dell screwed with the controller between Ivy and Haswell and changed it. The battery is "compatible" up until the point you try and charge it - so it's useless to even attempt it. It may not even run at the firmware level. Never tried it personally.

If it doesn't work, I'd point fingers at the BMS being altered rather then the computer.

Do you think its worth buying the 97wh one off that site and try? The thing is the customer support told me it won't work. So it would be hassle returning it because well they told me it doesn't work... but from what i read online, it should. But have you heard of that statement where they say

Okay I guess I won't order the 97wh battery then from them since I don't think they accept a replacement for the 84wh one if i tell them it doesn't work. But then again, I woulda still asked them if the 97wh worked or not for the 9550 etc.

But does what he say about the battery with configuration it shipped and not model number alone make sense? Again, i never heard of anything like that before. I mean if your laptop battery is model xxxxxx.... and you buy that model... wouldn't that work always? Because i read about ppl who used a 97wh on their 9550 and it worked according to them. But if they ordered a 97wh from laptopbatteryexpress and tried that on the same 9550 laptop, it won't work because that battery isn't configured when shipped for the 9550?

For anyone who stumbles onto this: yes, I can confirm that 97Wh batteries from the 9560 are completely compatible with the 9550. Get one directly from Dell though - iFixit's 97Wh (and 84Wh) batteries are about 1.5mm thicker than the OEM ones, too thick to fit properly without interfering with the touchpad.

Dell only recently began selling batteries in response to RtR. At that time, the only vendor I knew of with OEM Dell parts (and may be B-Stock) was PartsPeople. I was unsure about the 94Wh, but that was due to the difference being so marginal I didn't think it was worth the risk,.
