Home button loose bracket

So I replaced an iPad pro9.7 screen and got as far as the home bracket replacement when swapping the home button back on the screen. I have tried to adhere the bracket in the same fashion it was in (the repair guide shows a different cabling than mine also). But I’ve noticed that after getting it in place the home button sinks and then will slide out from under the bracket causing it to not be usable.

So What I’m trying to figure out is how to get this home button and bracket back on in a way that will keep it in place. I’ve tried some double sided tape on the top and bottom of the button itself and then super-gluing the bracket, but it still slides after a couple of button presses.

I also noticed that in the guide the button cable is much slimmer than the cable I have. My cable doesn’t allow room for the cable and the bracket, the bracket only fits underneath the fold in the home button cable. I’m not sure if that makes any difference or what. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Here are some pictures of the home button and bracket. If you notice the bracket is as long as the space available so it has to slide under the ribbon cable to fit properly.

I also noticed the small black dot is no longer fixed to the back of the home button. Does anyone know of a good “replacement”? It still clicks when I use my fingernail, but I think the lack of the black dot might be part of my problem.

You definitely want to replace the “black dot”, you can usually get them from another, dead, home button. That is why the click isn’t working when everything is mounted.

As for the bracket, I find that using just double-sided tape makes for a squishy feel in the best case and outright slippery in the worst. I would start by properly cleaning all of the old adhesive aways, on both the screen and the bracket. Then apply good quality tape (3M/Tesa). Once the alignment is good and the button works properly, I apply a small bead of epoxy around the bracket (not on or near the flex!) - this is what Apple has been doing of late. This locks in the bracket and should make for a nice repair.

Do you know of a good way to remove the old adhesives? It seems like the 91% iso alcohol I have isn't doing much to it. Also, this is the first iPad pro 9.7 repair I've done. Do you know of any other iPads of iPhones that may have had the black dot? I have a few broken screens from those lying around I can dig out, but if I knew what I was looking for it would be quicker. Thanks for your help.

@delcurrrepairit The black dot is universal and you can get from any generations of iPad and maybe iPhone too. And also, make sure you apply epoxy to lock in the bracket as Minho said, it makes a big difference.

@sammyz Any good adhesives solvents that are safe for the part? I'm having a heck of a time with the 91% iso alcohol I have. It works, kind of, but is very slow and still leaves a little bit of residue on the surface.

@delcurrrepairit You can try Goo Gone, it has a bad stench that I just cannot tolerate. Personally I use 100% iso alcohol and scrape off the residue carefully with razor blade.

OK. I'll see if I can get better iso alcohol and make pick up a small bottle of Goo Gone. Thanks for the help!

Repair-it, did you fix it in the end? Can i use a ip5s button for the black dot? And how to attach it to the homebutton?

I did end up fixing it. I believe the black dot is the same size as long as it is on the button already. I say this because I did no use the same model button black dot to replace it.

If your very careful the whole black dot and a thin layer of plastic should come off. If you can't (like I couldn't) then you can cut around it with a razor blade or exact-o knife and take it off. The hardest part fore though was reattaching the bracket with a loose black dot and having it stay where it was needed. I did get it, but it took some working to get it to click and feel right.

If your careful and use some super glue to get the bracket to stay, you should be able to get it to work. Best of luck to you. Let me know if you have any other questions.

5s button? That plastic actuator button is huge!

You can use an iPhone 4 power button, you can buy the individual pieces in bulk dirt cheap on eBay.

With these home button brackets I always clean these to mint condition with isopropyl alcohol then use Tesa 61395 to hold the bracket down to the screen. The home buttons should always retain their plastic ring spacers that help with holding the rubber gasket and holding flat to the screen.
