How do I fix these sleep issues?

As of late, my HP M401n has been having issues in sleep mode. When the printer goes to sleep for an extended amount of time, it has a tendency to stay in sleep mode and requires a power cycle to get it out of this mode. Since I hook much printer up over USB, I also know it shows up as offline in this state and it does not wake up despite being a wake event. This can usually be caught because the printer doesn't turn off within 8 hours on its own in this state. Along with these 2 issues the fastest way to determine if this is the problem is pressing one of the buttons on the control panel.

Even if I press a button on the control panel I usually can't get the printer out of this state without power cycling it. Once it gets to this point, there's not much I can do to kick it out and get it back online.

At one point I also had Tray 1 sensor issues and similar sleep issue, but this was corrected with new firmware along with the bad tray 1 sensor. The sleep issue managed to stay back for a while, but it has come back again.

Since the firmware on the printer is is up to date (20171205/built on 12/15/17), this issue is being caused by something else or something HP COULD fix in firmware but clearly does not care about. I think the firmware is set to allow downgrades so that may be an option since I archived the 2016022 firmware file (I like to keep one previous firmware revision on hand in case I ever need to downgrade), but that has unpatched security issues on network installations. It appears to have been known about since the 2015 Smart Install firmware, but has never been reliably fixed with new firmware.

This issue is getting tiring and I need a practical solution. If it can't be reliably fixed or it's an expensive issue to fix I'm seriously considering buying a new printer at this point. I have also checked 2ndary service and did not find any error codes to work with so it's an open ended problem to try and fix.

Update

I have tried setting the sleep delay to 5 minutes in the 2ndary service menu to 5 minutes (default is 1 minute). No dice; still doing it.

This is mostly for @jayeff.

I left the printer on for 12 hours with a new wake event and Auto power off disabled and it came back on without any issues pressing the power button.

Judging by what is found online this seems to be an ongoing problem (not waking from sleep, that is) over the years with certain HP laser printers

If your previous firmware was working OK you may have to go back to it if you can.

Just curious what happens if you set the Auto power down delay to OFF (if possible) and then set a Wake Event. Does it turn the Auto Power down delay back on to the default value at all and does it alter anything?

I changed Shut down after to Never and set Sleep/Auto off to 1 hour. The 2ndary service sleep delay does not change.

I have reset the 2ndary service sleep delay to 1 minute too.

I was just going off the User guide so maybe my terminology is not correct.

To me Sleep Delay etc is different to Auto Power down but maybe I'm not reading it correctly.

I meant what happens if you turn Auto Power Down to OFF and then set a Wake Event, after the printer goes into sleep mode, does the Wake Event work and turn on the printer and has Auto Power Down Off turned ON again to the default value by any chance?

The way I set it up is USB printing has always been a wake command - it's been configured that way from day 1 for years. The M401 series has a sleep delay (sleep mode) and auto power off (self explanatory).

I set Auto power off (timer when the printer automatically turns off) to Never and I'm going to let it sit on for 12 hours or so and try waking it from the power button and then run a print job to it 12 hours later. The idea being I would leave it in sleep mode long enough to let it go into that bad state and see if it occurs with that setup.

If I'm missing anything let me know. I'm beyond frustrated since HP can't get their head out of their ass to fix this issue without making it a crappy patch that works.

Jeez I'm bad at phrasing. I'm getting old.

What I really mean is that you set a 'new' Wake event AFTER you set Auto Power down to never, i.e. get rid of your "old" USB print wake event and then set it again after you have set the Auto Power down to never.

Can someone tell me how to create this "wake event" I have a M402DW with the same issues. but I cannot set the sleep or auto power off to never, there is only a time delay on these options.

This is a 2 line LCD model, so I suspect it's very, very similar to the M401n setup. That being said, I also don't know with 100% certainty since I usually see the color LCD printers nowadays (the front USB port upgrade and better control panel are worth the minor price bump if there's an option). While I prefer the color LCD, I understand the aspect about the 2 line LCD being tried and true. If the changes are major let me know so I can try one in Staples (or a similar store) and see how much has changed. 2ndary service access has changed (changes with every model or control panel, generally), but you don't need it; I tried because I know how and thought it would help.

You can do this through the HP EWS as well. The layout may be different on the M402 series, but it's probably under ECOsmart console in System. Set it as low as you can and reset it to your previous values once you seen it's cleared up. Never probably isn't required, but I used it on mine since I have it available.

I have exactly the same problem and tried already the last three firmware versions. Right now I have version 20180318 installed.

My settings:

Shut down after: Never

Sleep/Auto off after: 1 hour

Wake up on:

x USB

x LAN

x touch panel

When the printer goes into sleep mode (which obviously can't be deactivated in the settings) the power button is blinking as it should do - but no print job via LAN can wake up the printer. Even pressing the power button so that the display is on and the button constantly glows changes nothing: Windows can't print and shows the printer as "offline". Interestingly sending a print job from my iPad via AirPrint wakes up the printer without any problems!

For LAN print jobs I first have to switch the printer off and on again befor I can print...

Any more hints what to do to solve this?

UPDATE:

It's me once again.

Reducing the network speed to 100 Mbit/s half duplex really solved the problem!

Printer wake now up on every print job from my PC or Laptop!

Switching back to 1000 Mbit/s brings back the wake-up-from-sleep issue again!

I use mine over USB since I have the base model and no continent access to Ethernet. Sounds like an M402 Series since sleep can't be disabled.

However I strongly suspect there is an IP conflict. Set the IP address on the printer as a static IP. This generally solves the problem over a network when you have the issue persist.

It' not an IP conflict as I'm using a static IP for the printer.

I assumed it was an M402 based on the lack of option to disable sleep. AFAIK I've been able to disable it before this firmware... I can always revert since I preserve the old firmware updaters :-).

Well, a hint by myself :-)

Was wondering why AirPrint jobs wake up the printer and Windows print job don't.

So I reduced the network speed in the printer setting from 1000 Mbit/s to 100 Mbit/s half duplex yesterday.

24h later I made a test print - and: the printer woke up!

I will make some more tests, if it's really caused by the network speed...stay tuned!

For anyone following this. The solution is to NOT use the drivers that windows download, and to go and get the HP drivers from the HP website. The HP Drivers force the unit to wake up regardless of the settings in the printer. This has been tested on Ethernet as well as wireless.

I used those drivers and it STILL had the problem. I don't use the UPD or M$ driver with this because it's old enough the HP Device Toolbox doesn't work.

Same for me: I'm using the latest HP driver, not the UPD or MS Windows driver. This seems to be not the root of the problem.

It lies with the printer it seems. Certain models are known for persistent sleep models and the M401 series is known to be one of those.

Without a stable firmware fix, resets like the one that @jayeff mentioned that worked for me (and hasn't come back since) are the best way to do it.
