Quickest way to find out what the problem is, is to get the vehicle's OBDII port scanned with an appropriate scantool, to see what DTC codes (diagnostic troubleshooting codes) are stored.
The code will tell you what the problem is.
If you're in the USA, larger auto parts retail stores e.g. AutoZone, PepBoys, O'reilley's will do this for free apparently.
