The Lenovo Thinkpad E15 Gen 2 was released in 2020. It can either have a 11th generation Intel Core i3/i5/i7, or feature a AMD Ryzen 4000 series CPU.

Screen flickering and possible overheating.

My laptop seems to be getting quite warm near the top left (near the qwer and 1234 and asdf area on the keyboard. My screen has also been flickering here and there not constantly but I have had it happen 3 times in the past few days and it is concerning. What could be the cause and how can I fix it?

Hi @royalflush26831

Has the laptop been dropped or gotten wet at all?

Try connecting an external monitor (TV?) to the laptop's HDMI port and view the display from the laptop on the monitor and check if it flickering as well or is stable. Don't forget to press the F7 key (or Fn + F7 keys) to toggle the display output between the laptop and the external monitor.

If the monitor display is OK it could either be a faulty/loose EDP cable connection (either end motherboard or LCD panel) or a faulty LCD panel.

With the display showing on the laptop screen, try moving the lid slowly, very slowly back and forth and check if this affects the flickering at all e.g. stays the same, worse, stops.

If slowly moving the lid affects the flickering, then most likely its a cable problem e.g. loose connection or damaged where it passes through the hinge to get from the motherboard to the LCD panel in the lid

If slowly moving the lid does not affect the flickering it still could be the cable or the LCD panel.

Here's the maintenance and service guide for the laptop.

Go to p.76 (82 of 109 pdf) to view the procedure to remove the LCD panel. This will allow you to check and inspect the EDP cable to see if it is securely connected and not damaged and also to replace the LCD panel if necessary.

If the monitor display is also flickering, then there's a problem on the motherboard and the schematics would be needed to find out what's wrong.

When the laptop is open also check if you can pinpoint where it seems to be getting hot as this may help to narrow down what may be a problem.

Well the most common reason for overheating are:

  • Dust buildup in fan or heatsink
  • Old or dried thermal paste
  • Fan not spinning properly
  • Heavy background tasks

So look for all this issue.
