Aging Kenmore Ultra Wash Dishwasher Model 665.13269K114

My Kenmore Ultra Wash Dishwasher (Model 665.13269K114) seems to have a mind of its own. Sometimes it cleans the dishes well and sometimes it doesn't seem to clean them at all. Typically, I throw the Cascade pod into the dishwasher. I've heard both sides about using the detergent door to protect the pod from the first cycle, which is a rinse cycle. When I throw the pod in, I'll sometimes find it partially dissolved near the door. I clean the filters often, and run the sink water to ensure 120 degree water is being used. And I typically run this cycle sequence: Smart Wash/High Temp/Sani Rinse/Heated Dry. I have done a number of resets on the unit using the "Press Pots & Pans/Normal Wash/One Hour Wash times 3/Latch Door." I have also reset the circuit breaker, which effects the same reset of the unit. My guess (based on the 5/13 date on the back of the Use & Care Guide) is that this unit was manufactured in 2013. I also called Sears Customer Service, but they could not tell me when the unit was manufactured. We bought the unit new (probably around that time). I have opened the door after it starts just to check to ensure water is pumping into the unit, and I also have steam coming out when I open the door. And the heating element is obviously working. Sometimes, during cycle pauses, I put my ear against the door and I can hear what sounds like a relay or something electronic clicking. Yesterday, I ran the unit through THREE "Normal Wash/High Temp/Sani Rinse Heated Dry" cycles, and after each time it finished, there was still evidence of grime on the dishes. Just the other day, the unit cleaned the dishes very well. Is it time to shop for a new dishwasher? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi @johnpatrick

Some things to check:

  • Check that the dishwasher filter is clear and clean so as to ensure maximum water pressure is there during the wash cycle.
  • Check that all the outlet holes on the middle spray arm are clear and not clogged. Water being pumped out through the holes causes the spray arm to rotate, thereby covering all the dishes.

It is easier if you remove the spray arm so that it can be checked. Remove 2 locks on metal roller guides. Remove top basket and turn upside down on the counter. Remove the spray arm by prying one side in and lift out then push other side down and then out. Install same as removal. Line up spray arm and turn clockwise till you hear a click. Install basket and install locking plugs.

If still no good, here's the tech sheet for the dishwasher. Run the diagnostic tests as shown on p.3 and check if any error codes are being displayed. The error codes and their meaning/possible causes are shown on p.7-p.12

If there is a problem and a faulty part is the reason, here's a parts list that is useful.

Locate the wanted part in the list and note the manufacturer's part number that is shown with it. Search online for the part number only, to find suppliers that suit you best.

Hi Jayeff,

Thanks for the quick reply to my Kenmore Dishwasher quandary.

I had previously checked the filter, removed and cleaned the spray arms (top and bottom). I've also run the diagnostic test ("Press Pots & Pans/Normal Wash/One Hour Wash times 3/Latch Door.") numerous times. My problem is that there is no display window on my Kenmore model to see the diagnostic code as there is with the Kenmore Elite model. This is where I need direction.

See p.6 and count the light pulses. They indicate the error
