Repairing energy saving Lamps

Hi All,

With over use of energy saving light bulbs,we are left with thousands of non functioning bulbs around us.I have heard that 80% of them are malfunctioning due to faulty electronic parts inside the starter circuit.Any clues on repairing them?Any guides etc....

Thanks

Thank you Oldturket0.This is great advice from ifixit.com (as always).Already fixed 6 of them.working on the rest .Saving environment and saving some cash for the local school.(Owner of the faulty CFLs.)I am doing volunteer work for schools and non-profit organizations.

Excellent, glad I could help. Keep on fixing those....:-)

por

Fixed 168 of them with the IFIXIT help.VIVA IFIXIT.com

por

Is there one particular component that is failing?

por

Vahid, that is excellent. You really should make a guide for ifixit. Show us all how to do it...Great Job.

Solução escolhida

2-There is a capacitor connected to the filament, in many cases the capacitor was short CCT this was the only fault. Replace the capacitor removed fault Voila, CFL is back to life.

3-CFLs with blown fuse, It was mainly caused by a fault in DC bridge cct., I simply replaced all the rectifying diodes (I have tons of them in my lab) and voila, rebirth of another CFL.

4-Another common fault in the CFLs was Short 400V capacitor that I assume had caused damaged to the transistors and resistors connected to them. There was no sign of resistor color codes as they were to dark ( I assume caused by overheat) but I had plenty of similar CFLs in hand and I checked the one with good resistors, Their value of the first resistor was around 2 ohms and the other around 20 ohms. I also had to change the transistors as well. Another CFL brought back to life.

5-Diac and its 500Kohm resistor at fault .In a few cases, I found the 500Kohm resistor to be open cct. ,And in some cases changing the diac itself resolved the fault.

Update

Hi Mayer,Below is my experience. Not sure if it helps.

HI oldturkey03,In case this can help anyone.Just a modest simple effort to save our Planet.

'''Caution, There is a 400V capacitor in the cct, THIS NEEDS TO BE DISCHARGED PRIOR TO YOUR WORK,I DISCHARGE IT BY CONNECTING THE SOLDERIN IRON’S POWER PLUG ACCROSS IT. Make sure you take the measures to discharge it too.

'''

Here is a summary of what I experienced so far, just to remind you that I had tons of faulty CFLs and that helped me a lot to exchange parts to find the faulty one. It would have been impossible to succeed without so many in hand.

1-One thing I learnt was that to check the bulb filament first because this part is not repairable and I could not found a replacement part in the local market. This will save your time and efforts greatly.

Good Tips. Thanks Vahid

Vahid, just like anything else, each manufacturer has their own circuit board for the CFL's. From what I have read the most common issue are the failure of some of the capacitors on the circuit boards. You might want to take a look right here. Plenty of schematics and values of the components. It might just be what you need to see if you can fix the lamps. Of course I am making the assumption you are talking about CFL. Hope this helps, good luck.

Good to see the details. Here I would like to add, for a CFL; if filament of one side is burnt still you can run the CFL with one working filament. I have repaired 2 CFLs at my home and these are working fine.

Only you have to add a 10 ohm/1w register to the circuit. Video is available at youtube.com (search for "Reuse faulty CFL")

adding a 10 ohm/1w register to the circuit,if filament of one side is burnt ,will it blast or there qny risk? and as i checked resistance of filament of 3,5,7,9,11,15 all hav same 11-16 ohms so can i use 10ohms /1 w resister to all of them?

hello,

thank you for ur tip

i hav some questions for u

0. what if we use that resistor in parallel to the fused terminal , as u put both terminal of fused part on one point and put resistor in series

1. can we use 10 ohms for all 3,5,7,9,11,15, watt cfl

2. how long it worked

3.will it blast due to heat

waiting for ur ans u can try resistor in parallel n tell me coz i dont hav components as u hav

hi Shajeeh Mustafa , i hav tried as u did too but the power fluctuation killed the transistor ,,ia dont hav more cfls to experiment but i hav got one idea that because resistance of cgl filament is around 12 ohms so insted of putting resistor in series we hav to put it parallel to the burnt filament so that it will balance capacitor as well as when clf glows the high voltage can easily pass through the circuit plz reply ur result after u tried

Due to the over usage of energy saving lights,We left thousands of non functioning bulbs around us.There are several methods which are used to recover these non functioning bulbs. For every bulb there is a capacitor connected to its filament.Remove this capacitor CFL back to life.Another method is replace all rectifying diodes and voila which help to produce another CFL light. If you need to know more about repairing of lights,This site will help you.
