How do I replace individual keys

A key in the laptop was forcefully removed, and the notches that lock the pieces together broke. The button on the keyboard itself is still functional but it is very awkward to press without the actual key. I was wondering if its possible to replace individual keys in the keyboard. Preferably it would be possible to buy replacement keys for this laptop, but I am open to other workaround solutions.

Hi,

Here’s just one supplier of replacement keys for your model. There may be others. just search online for Lenovo IdeaPad 120S-11IAP replacement keys to find suppliers that suit you best.

Quite an expensive approach in my eye. For now Ill just swap it out with the |\ key since I don't use it too much. I've heard of some who just bought an entire replacement keyboard and took individual keys from there which to me seems more viable so that I have other keys to spare. I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Buying an entire keyboard to replace one key and to have spares for the future (what if you break the same key again?) might depend on how hard you are on the keys and how often they break and need replacing.

If replacing the key with another from the same keyboard, there is also the aesthetics to consider. Can you stand looking at the missing key all the time?

If after a while more keys fail than you have exact replacements for (might begin to confuse the layout if using different numbered/lettered keys to what is normally there, unless you're an expert typist) and you wish to replace the entire keyboard, here's the hardware maintenance manual for the laptop. Go to p.59 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the upper case. The keyboard is part of the upper case.

Here's a link to the parts for the laptop. Click on Select Commodity > c-cover with keyboard (192) to find the part numbers for the assembly.

The keyboards are country specific along with the colour so it may take awhile to find the part number for your particular variant as there are 192 options. Usually the part number can be found on the underside of the assembly. Only mentioning it because it is easier to find suppliers by searching for the part number. FYI assemblies cost about $US45
