I have a Late 2012 iMac 27” Core i7 13,2 A1419 - 2456 and I’m considering upgrading either the logic board or CPU for better performance.
The current CPU is a 3.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 socket 1155.
I’m unsure of what compatible logic boards would go in this machine
Any help gladly accepted

@oldturkey03 - Given the fact he already has the highest offered i7 3.4 GHz CPU. Replacing the logic board wouldn't offer improvement in compute ability, but if graphics was an issue then I could see the benefit going with a Radeon GTX 680MX 2GB GPU board.
Frankly, I would upgrade the SATA HDD to a SSD or better yet install a PCIe/NVMe blade SSD setting it up as the boot drive. Then you would have the best performing system possible.
@danj that is correct. My answer is strictly focused on the question “ I’m unsure of what compatible logic boards would go in this machine” not anything else. I trust the OP will elaborate once realized that the logic board is already the higher performing one.
Thanks so much both of you. Both drives replaced last year; boot drive is now a 500Gb SSD - data drive a 1Tb SSD.
The reasoning behind a new logic board or CPU was to help the machine cope with the terrible time it is now having after an Excel upgrade. Constant spinning wheels for 5 minutes at a time. This hardly ever happened prior to the latest upgrade of Excel and it is the only program giving me grief. I thought that perhaps it need a faster CPU, which got me thinking about upgrading.
I was hoping that a later logic board would have the same form factor as mine, but if the logic board is almost at the top of the range which is compatible with the system (3.4GHz i7, GTX 675MX 1GB Apple part number 661-7159), then the only option is the CPU and even then I am not guaranteed Excel performance will improve, but happy to try.
So my CPU options may be my best bet. There appear to be a lot of socket 1155 CPUs on offer, so any thoughts as to what would a substantial improvement in performance?

Excel won't benefit any performance switching our your logic board to a better GPU option.
As far as CPU swap outs other than what Apple used your systems EFI (BIOS) won't support newer i9 CPU's.
As you're fighting through the upgrade process that too is aiming to an I/O type of issue not a CPU issue.

The best upgrade you can do to increase your speed is to install an SSD.See step #32 of this guide. And you transposed the EMC #

cheers Mayer. That was one of the first things I did. There are now 2 SSDs in the machine; 500Gb as a system drive and 1Tb as a data drive.
@honkin Do a force quit and see if you have unwanted items running in the background. To do a force quit hit the Command key and the escape keys at the same time and note the programs that are running.

@honkin - From your added info I think you have a different issue than a CPU performance issue. I'm suspecting you have a RAM issue or a storage type of issue.
I would run the onboard diagnostics to see is anything pop's with it. Restart your system and Press the D key. did you get any errors?

Can you give us a bit more on your RAM how much do you have? Also what are your SSD’s make and models and how much free space do they have? And lastly the macOS you are running.

The SSDs are both OWC; the boot one a 500Gb OWC Aurora Pro and the data drive a 1Tb OWC Mercury Extreme. Each has over 200Gb free. The RAM is 32.0GB (4x 8GB) OWC PC3-12800 DDR3L 1600MHz SO-DIMM 204. I haven't yet done a reboot D, but will and let you know. macOS is Catalina 10.15.7 (19H1509)
Oh, the SSDs and memory all purchased almost exactly 3 years ago. The OS and Excel only upgraded in the last week, which is when the majority of these spinning wheel issues started. It wasn't a clean install, rather an upgrade, so maybe I bite the bullet and do a clean install of Catalina and all apps to see if it helps
@honkin - How full is your boot drive? With 32GB you need more free space than a system with less RAM. I’m assuming the blade SSD is your boot drive, I would have 1/3 free.

The system SSD is 480Gb capacity with 213 available. Maybe stripping it and doing a clean instead will get rid of a lot of the bloat which has built up with successive upgrades to both OS and apps. Multiple versions of After Effects and Premier etc
@honkin - Did you rebuild your boot drive yet?
