It is possible that you may need a new battery. There are some issues with the charging circuit on that model iPod, but start with cleaning your dock connector. Use a small toothpick and CAREFULLY remove all debris from it. Check for bend and corroded or otherwise damaged pins. Check your USB cord and make sure that it is in good working condition. If nothing externally fixes it, use this guide to replace your battery. Make sure that the battery cable is deep enough inserted in the connector. Be careful when you move the clip that holds the cable to the connector up. It has a tendency of breaking of the logic board. Hope this helps, good luck.
