How do I access files from HDD?

My Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop was damaged and I salvaged my hard drive from it. I need to access my files and information from its hard drive but don’t know how to do it? I’ve read this as a possible suggestion:

To recover the data, purchase a 2.5" EIDE (NOT SATA) USB 2.0 enclosure and mount the drive into it.  Attach it to a working system by USB and copy your data files to the host system's hard drive.

I’m using a Razer Blade 15 computer with access to two USB 3.0 ports. The HDD from the Dell Inspiron 5150 looks to have a 22 pin (only) interface connection (See below photos)? The recommendation above simply doesn’t work because of the type of connection I have to my HDD.

This is how I am setup.

This is the bottom view (notice the 2 pins not plugged in and connected); I hope I have it connected correctly and that the 2 pins not connected aren't the reason why I can't access or read the drive?

Here is the error message I am getting trying to open the HDD that is connected.

Hi,

Just wondering if the 22 pin connector on the HDD (is it 44 pin - 22 pins in row on top separated from 22 pins in row underneath?) actually unplugs from the HDD exposing 44 male pins, like the 4 pins to the right?

If so then you could use an ide to USB 3.0 adapter (supplier example only) to connect the HDD to the laptop. Note the 44 pin (2 x 22 pin) female connector on the side of the adapter whereas the other connector is for a 7 + 15 pin connector.

The 4 pins to the right are for the master/slave settings for the HDD and should be left as is, i.e. in the master position. Here’s an image from the HDD datasheet that shows what the master/slave pin configuration is.

Thank you, your suggestion worked! I've ordered the IDE USB 3.0 adapter as well that you recommended. Keeping my fingers crossed I can access my files and information stored on the HDD?

Greetings jayeff, I purchased the Sabrent USB 3.0 to SSD/SATA/IDE 2.5/3.5/5.25-INCH Hard Drive Converter with UL Power Supply & LED Activity Lights and connected my 2.5 IDE. I cannot access my hard drive using my laptop with it connected. It detects the Removable disk (D:) but it shows no information for that drive. The power is running to the HDD that is plugged into the Sabrent but no access to the HDD is given. When I double click on the (D:) it states "Please insert a disk into the removable (D:)" I am using a Razer Blade laptop running Windows 7.

Hi @David Daugherty

The HDD has 48 pins i.e. 44 pins for the power and data handling and the 4 pins that can be selected to determine what type of drive connection it is when used in conjunction with another HDD i.e. master or slave.

I'm more concerned that it appears that maybe it isn't plugged in all the way into the connector.

A close up image view of the picture you posted looking at the underside seems to show that the pins at the other end of the HDD (at the top of the image) away from the 4 pins that are not inserted don't appear to be going in as far as the ones close to the 4 pins are.

You said that "The power is running to the HDD that is plugged into the Sabrent" so does this mean that you can feel or hear the HDD "spinning"? If not then it is not getting any power or there is a problem with the HDD itself.

Page 3-11 (Fig.3.10) in the HDD datasheet link that I posted above shows the pinout for the HDD which shows that the power supply is at the other end away from the 4 separate pins used for configuration

Can't see it on the Sabrent product link but is the 44 pin 2.5" IDE connector that the HDD plugged into numbered at all? If so line it up with the numbering on the datasheet

That 22pin connector seems to be a clip-on as I googled the HDD model and it seems to use PATA, you can simply pull it off.

Although PATA to USB adapters are also hard to come by now, it’s way too ancient.

This can range from a broken hard drive to bad power supply to simply bad contact. It's best to try with known good drives and adapters to check which is it.
