Genius told me I have "Water-Damage"

1 year ago, I took my macbook pro to apple store and want to change my keyboard because it is sticky. After examination genius told me my macbook pro has water damage. I was shocked because i wasnt sure if my device was water damaged. After that i changed my keys and it worked like charm. But today my space key and ‘7’ key is now sticky. I examined my macbook and saw my water damage indicators are white! Then i removed all my keys and inspected every one of them but there is not sign of water damage.

Why the genius told me my device was water damaged and what are the ways of showing water damaged macbook pro?

Thanks :)

PS : I am a Turkish citizen and there are currency changes.

Apple’s standards for water damage are low - I don’t see any immediate obvious water damage. You can’t hide a water sensor under the battery due to the 3M tape and I don’t see any other than the 2 near the battery and those are white.

Take it in this time and if they pull that card, demand to speak to a manager and call them out on their BS. Don’t take it. DO NOT ADMIT TO OPENING IT AS IT WILL BE USED AGAINST YOU. Demand proof, they will probably back off and honor the warranty.

Are there any other water damage indicators except my photo? Should i tell them i changed my keys?

@umuthope NOTHING they can use against you - that includes the key swap.

@umuthope - I agree with Nick your system from what we see has not liquid damage so I'm at a loss what the Genius told you otherwise.

If you have an Apple Store near you I would go their Vs an authorized service center as sometimes these folks don't get paid quickly from Apple which could explain them turning you away or convince you to a paid job vs warranty.

If you did go to an Apple Store make sure you don't get the same person.

And hold your ground! Have them prove it and take a picture of what they claim and post it here for us to see.

@umuthope Do they have laws in Turkey shifting the burden of proof onto the manufacturer like we do in the US?

All we have to do here is exactly what I told you - prove it or fix it with most caving in unless they have irrefutable proof. The laws here (and in some cases, lemon laws) allow us to stand our ground when they pull this card. They may put up a fight to avoid the repair citing the same false water damage line.

Yes! We have consumer protection laws but during coronavirus outbreak they are postponed. I added there are currency changes between USD and TR(Turkish Lira) and not a lot of Turkish consumers uses iMac or Macbook. I think there are not many authorized personel like in USA. The iPhone service experience and macbook service experience are not same. I am just sad that i didn't figure out earlier. I could take actions much earlier. I also inspected some of my keyboards key and didn't find any corrosion.
