odd question; am I somehow overworking my motherboard's USBs?

i’ve got an old ibuypower gaming tower (second owner, but i know the first, he didnt modify the tower)

its got the generic USBs out the back mounted directly onto the motherboard, along with a couple plugs for additional USB ports, one of which is actively used (the 3.0 plug leading to a couple 3.0 ports on top of the tower)

when viewing streams, streaming, or doing such network taxing tasks, windows will play the disconnect sound, or stutter the stream, reconnect my network, (mobile tethering, no wireless cards) and all USB devices will seemingly stutter with it. (example being device RGB lights)

motherboard is: msi 760gma-p34(fx)

plugged in:

mobile phone providing tethering on top USB 3.0 port, the mentioned one with the plug.

all other devices plugged into mounted USB on back, being;

razer blackwidow chroma (uses 2 USB ports, second one powers the keyboard’s side USB, which my headset is plugged into (MPOW HC))

razer firefly

razer naga 2014

dualshock 4 controller

2.5 inch external HDD, 1TB

also a 3.5 inch HDD can also, and is sometimes, be mounted to the top, if that matters, although it doesnt use USB

am i using too much power?

thing cant take it?

i just dont know at this point.

unsure, dont know how to check power supply

RAM is 16 GB (DDR3 i think)

@magicalpamda your power supply should have a label affixed to it. Give us the number from that. Interested in seeing how many Watt's it list

Hi @magicalpamda

I was hoping that it would show the actual power being used by each root hub as it is shown in my PC.

As can be seen the two devices combined do not use the full power available on the root hub that they are connected to, but your devices may require more and may be near the maximum limit

I was thinking that if each hub that had devices connected was delivering power near to the 500mA limit and all were doing this at the same time then it might have affected the connected devices if they didn’t have enough power intermittently.

This is assuming that the USB controller that is in the attached devices are being powered by the desktop and do not have their own power supply.

the "power required" section has a 500 next to each attached device, i see you have 100, but what im saying is all devices are marked as "USB Composite Device" needing 500 mA, i will attach a screenshot to the post, showing what i see. (and yes, none of them have their own power supply)

additional edit: im willing to accept my power supply is simply not strong enough for the task at hand although this is astonishing to me as my old laptop could handle more USB workload (using non-powered USB hubs) and still run fine.. only differences were instead of running an HDD powered by the USB port, it was handling 4-5 USB drives and was generally charging a device or two

I'm not saying that this is the problem, simply that it may have been worthwhile looking at as you do seem to have a lot of devices connected at the same time all drawing power.

looking at what you posted it seems that the ports are supplying their maximum output. At least the two you showed are.

A laptop may require less power to run the CPU/ motherboard etc so that there may be more power available for the peripherals but this is just a guess on my part, based on that laptops were designed to be more efficient with their power usage as they were designed to be powered by battery power and all that entails and not a dedicated mains power supply.

Here's a link that may help you to determine if your PSU is adequate or is struggling

@magicalpamda definitely a weak PSU but this sounds like a network issue more than anything else. Have you tried to connect via wired network to see if it streams better. Streaming is very processor demanding and it is possible that your network connection can not supply what is demanded while streaming.

i do not believe it is network based, as the stutters match with hardware acting funny, and being able to run large games like GTA V, i would be surprised if a 720p30 stream is lagging me. network tests also usually round about to ~30 MBps down, 10 MBps up

i currently, and almost always, use USB tethering as my network, as it is my fastest.

Hi,

Check in Device Manager > click on arrowhead (>) to expand the list for Universal Serial Bus Controllers > right click on the first USB Root Hub entry > Properties > Power and check how much power is available, how many ports are available and how much power is required for the hub.

Do this for every USB Root Hub shown in the list.

It may be that you are requiring too much power from the +5V USB power bus.

it says various things but they all pull up the same 500mA required per port

listed attatched devices for all root hubs (there was 7 marked)

1. 3 total ports, 1 used.

2. 3 total ports, 1 used.

3. 6 total ports, 0 used.

4. 3 total ports, 2 used.

5. 3 total ports, 0 used.

6, 6 total ports, 0 used.

7, 2 total ports, 0 used.

there is a single USB root hub marked as 3.0 which does not have a power tab in properties

i hope this is the information you had requested
