My brake lights only work when the car is off not when running the thi

Okay so my brake lights are not working when the car is running only when the car is off third brake light does work when the car is running but that is it and I also get turn signals and reverse lights only my brake lights I went through and checked all my fuses cannot find any blown I have no clue what is going on can anybody help

Has anyone figured this out? Cuz my truck is doing the same

I don’t know the answer but perhaps there may be a problem with the BCM (body control module) or perhaps the brake pedal switch or the wiring between the two.

Here’s an image from the wiring section of the 2013 Cruze repair manual showing the wiring (or part thereof) of the brake light circuit.

The red, blue and green arrows show the brake apply supply voltage (red), the brake apply sense signal (blue) and the low reference (green) wires between the brake pedal switch and the BCM.

The yellow arrow is the supply voltage to the Right rear stop lamp from the BCM.

The black arrow is the supply voltage to the left rear stop lamp from the BCM. .

The orange arrow is the supply voltage to the centre mount stop light from the BCM.

Can only suggest that you check the voltages from the BCM on the various leads to the brake switch and the stop lamps with the engine running and the engine off and with the brake pedal applied and normal to see if there is anything obviously different.

Hopefully this is a start and is of some help.

@josephwalkerjr The place to start here is with the brake light switch; first check it mechanically to make sure it's being pressed and released correctly as you step on the brake and release it. If everything looks good there, you probably need to check that the resistance is changing according to the pedal position, as the switch itself could have failed and be stuck in the "pedal pressed" position, either mechanically or electrically.

@jayeff has kindly already supplied the wiring diagram for that switch, so you can either test it with or without power. To test it with power, leave it plugged in and connect a voltmeter to first pin 3 then pin 4 (both are DK BLU/YEL) and verify that the voltage output from the pin varies with the position of the pedal. You can also simply measure the resistance of the connection by unplugging the switch then connect an ohmmeter across pins 2 and 3, then pins 4 and 5 and again operate the brake pedal and verify that the resistance changes with the movement of the pedal.

If either one fails to change, replace the switch. If the switch seems to be working correctly then it may be a wiring problem or an issue with your BCM or ECM.

I'd say test out the switch first then come back and let us know what you find and we'll see if we can figure out what to do next.
