Back-light (BW) off after screen replaced. Old screen also lost BW

Hi:

While replacing a defective display (still had a working back-light) the back-light stopped working. The new screen did not resolve the issue. I am hoping to find a solution to get the back-light up & running again, it does not appear to be a screen issue, I can see the display a little using a flashlight.

I have an SMD solder rework station if that is helpful.

I should also mention I thought I killed the phone due to a slightly long screw placed incorrectly near the display connectors. Could this still have caused the back-light issue?

Thanks!

Did you unplug the battery before you disconnected the display?

Generally I do disconnect the battery before doing anything to the phone, but I probably forgot to for every test cycle.

If you had long screw damage it would affect the image not the backlight. More than likely you have nudged a filter near the FPC. You will need a multimeter and the backlight diagram to work out what component on the backlight circuit is bad.

Thanks for your reply!

It is so relieving to hear I didn`t create long screw damage!

In retrospect it seems the old display may have been shorting the backlight. The phone frame was bent (now repaired), and the phone had been dropped. I found that with the old display out it sometimes worked, but touching the metal frame of the phone to any part of the metal case of the phone would kill the display, or maybe just the backlight.

I have a Fluke 115 DVM and a hot air rework station. I watched a video on repairing the entire backlight circuit, how do I get a backlight diagram?

Looking on the internet I have found images of the backlight components and a circuit diagram. Is there anything else I need?

After careful examination of iPhone 6 motherboard pictures (at the display connectors) I believe I see where a component was knocked off of my motherboard (see picture pointing out missing picture). Using a video as a guide I see approximately 0.5 ohms at the right pad of the missing component to ground. This reading is not found at the connector. Continuity exists between the end/bottom pin of the connector and the left pad of the missing component. Should that component be a resistor or coil? I believe the part designation is FL2024

Congratulations. Yes that is the ANODE backlight filter that is missing. If you are lucky you might be able to find it, if not you will need a replacement. "240-OHM-0.2A-0.8-OHM" Make sure you clean the under-fill all around the the other components so they won’t lift when you start applying heat around the area. (Use low heat to clear the under-fill) Best of luck.
