Bottom of screen dimmer than top of screen

Hi Guys, The lower third of my (early 2008) EMC2210 imac screen is noticeably dimmer than the rest of the screen. I can still see everything, but it can be a little difficult at times depending on the background. It was flickering for a day or so and I tried resetting the PRAM/ SMC and it came back dim… Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The screen capture you took won't show the displays defect. You'll need to use a camera (i.e. iPhone) to really see it.

@atczeero easily possible that this is caused by some bad CCFL’s but just to verify I’d check the inverter. I have had more trouble with components on the inverter going bad than the CCFL’s. Flip the connectors on the inverter and see if the bottom is then brighter than the top. If so, replace the inverter first.

I’m sure I know what you are facing here. The CCFL lamps are failing. Over time and age the lamps wear out. Finding these lamps is almost impossible as the few companies that made them have shutdown the manufacturing of them due to the Mercury they use. You might still find a full display unit available, as it turns out iFixit still has a few left [produto vinculado ausente ou desativado: IF168-011] and here’s the guide to put it in iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210 Display Panel Replacement

Dan, Thanks for all the information. I’m going to look into this right away. This baby’s been with me 11 years now and I’m not ready to say good bye…

We have a 2007 24” iMac (upgraded to El Capitan) that was having some screen issues. We inadvertently did a screen share with our new 2018 MacBook Air (as were trying to watch Disney movies using the big screen) and ended up finding that the MacBook Air adjusted the resolution on the iMac automatically and formatted a new screen on our old iMac that is much clearer, seemingly doing away with any of the LED diminishing problems. It’s like we replaced the screen but even better because it’s now configured to the higher HD screen resolution. Wow, lucked out. Try it and you will be amazed at the results. (And by the way we were not successful in using the larger screen to mirror because of privacy issues with Disney and Apple TV.) But was worth the effort for what we got!
