How can I retrieve the data?

Hey guys, Thanks for your help in advance.

Basically, long story short, I lost my dear brother in a car accident around a year ago, the police have since returned his phone and apple watch to us.

The phones screen is smashed (but still on the phone just lots and lots of cracks) and the bottom of the phone where you would connect the charger, is snapped upwards (so it is still attached but bent up).

This means I can’t plug it into the computerand charge it to retrieve the media. I will attach photos to this when I’m home later.

I was wondering, if there is any way for me and my mum to get the media from his phone - he was a powerlifter so those videos would be precious.

Also in terms of his Apple ID and Password, I do know the ID, but I don’t know the Password.

Can anyone please help!?

Fixing the damage to the phone is a start. But you still need to gain access to it. Apple did a good job with its security system.

Depending on what your brother set up it might be impossible to gain access. First you need to know the phones pass code which is a 4 or 6 digits. Keep in mind you only have three attempts before the phone will lock up.

If your brother has a PC or laptop which he used to backup his phone then gaining access to it would be easier to recover what it has. Connecting the iPhone to the system could also allow you to sync its data over as well.

Then you still have the PC's or laptop's user access to deal with and lastly the Apple ID to gain access to the iCloud account.

Hopefully with this information you have a better idea on whats involved. You still have a hard nut to crack and Apple won't be able to help you. Best of luck!

You will need a working screen and a working ligthning connector to get the PC authorized by the phone. On top of that you will need the passcode requested by the phone every time it is turned on if a protection passcode was configured. As far as iCloud is concerned nobody can help besides Apple..I have no idea if they will exceptionally release data to family members given the circumstances, but that’s the only road you can take.

If you want to try replace the screen and the charging connector you can get help from the following guides:

You might want to check with these folks DriveSavers - iPhone data recovery see what they say.

Hey Dan, DriveSavers actually have a horrible online reputation when it comes to iDevice data recovery. They quote absurdly high prices and typically miss obvious issues like LCD driver problems. Check out this Data Recovery - Challenging Case with comments from myself and Jessa...

The bottom line is no one can defeat Activation Lock on modern devices, heck we can't even defeat PIN locks (there are ways...theoretically, but beyond the financial wherewithal of common mortals as we saw in the FBI - San Bernardino case).

Not sure who downvoted this...but it wasn't me :>).

I think you jumped a different direction than I was heading.

It was more of offering another voice which could support the position.

Clearly they don't have any ability to overcome an iCloud locked phone. Presently the phone is not iCloud locked, remember he died! So he has not reached through the Ectoplasm to lock it. But! Thats not to say it could still get locked if the attempt to get through the 4 or 6 digit passcode messes up (3 strikes)!

@refectio This week there has been a lot of talk on YouTube about this as Apple banned Jesse for contradicting them. Apparently she can now do it. I was the one reporting that DriveSavers was also saying they could it.

If the owner has setup the device with an iCloud account, which according to the OP, he has...then it is iCloud locked. That doesn't impede data recovery however if the OP knows the passcode (or if there is no passcode). My point was, for the benefit of anyone else reading this Q&A is that DriveSavers can't do anything an experienced micro-solderer can't do, in fact, DriveSavers has proven on more than one occasion that they struggle with even basic repairs.

Here is a little thinking outside the box here. Did your brother have it connected or backed up to a laptop / Mac?

Dan already addressed this in his comment above...but yes, that would be a more straightforward option, especially if the phone can be nominally repaired.

Sorry missed that
