Audio knob causes audio loss

I have been hammering away at this Marantz receiver over the past couple of days. I had it working flawlessly. Then I turned it off and back on. Now a problem has arisen. If I turn it all the way up and turn it on, the audio is extremely quiet and if I turn the volume knob, the audio just dies completely. Any suggestions?

To be clear, if you turn it on with the volume knob at a low setting, does it work normally? Does it still work if you then turn the knob up?

I would assume that the audio is being transmitted to the speakers at a low setting, but it is so quiet you wouldn’t be able to hear it. If you then turn it all the way up there is no sound. However if you then receiver off then back on, you have quiet sound. Then if you so much as nudge the volume down one degree, all sound disappears.I did actually manage to fix it. Not sure how and it might not be a permanent fix. I reset the receiver, manual set all the settings again. Turned it off and then back on and everything works fine now. I think now that it is working again, I don’t think I am going to ever turn it off again.

Hi,

What is the model number of the receiver?

It may be that you have a faulty wiper in the Volume control potentiometer, if it uses this type of component, or if it uses a rotary encoder for its' volume control it may be faulty or dirty

Hi,

Your receiver uses a rotary encoder for the master volume control.

Front board p.27 of the service manual from link below, designation is VEC401. The part information is on p.84

It may be worthwhile to check if the switch's internal contacts are clean and making good contact etc.

Here's a link to a video that shows in general the principle of how to open and clean a rotary encoder switch assembly.

Be safety aware when working inside your receiver. Ensure that the power is totally disconnected before opening the receiver. Be gentle when handling etc in the encoder as you don't want to bend the splines etc.

There are a number of possibilities here, but all are dependent upon the model. Newer models use an electronic volume control which means that the volume IC may be defective. Older models use potentiometer controls which could be defective as well (bad slider or internal connections). Please update this with the model number so we can provide more details for your actual unit.

As I suspected, the volume is controlled through IC102. The problem can be the control itself not sending the proper signals to the IC or IC101 not selecting the proper input. Without seeing the machine and using a scope to see what is happening, it will be difficult to determine the problem.
