Is the CPU soldered down or not?

Hello

I would like to upgrade my iMac MID 2015 i5-4690 with an i7-4790K CPU.

I can't tell if the CPU is soldered onto the logic board in that model or not.

Can anyone help me? Thanks!

Cheers, Andrea

The specs of your systems CPU: Intel i5-6600 3.3 GHz same specs as i5-4690 which is a custom part for Apple.

The CPU you are thinking about: Intel i7-4790k 4.4 GHz

@ DAN Thanks for your reply....

Late 2014 and Mid 2015 has not 6600 but 4590 i5..The logic board is the same in either models and the CPU can be upgraded with I7 4790K, but it's not clear if it can be done in the mid 2015 logic board because that model was not upgradeable to I7 in the Apple specs..and I think it's SOLDERED in that model.... Someone can confirm this exactly???

The Apple online Spec sheets is what Apple configured and sold. Some possible configs are still possible as long as the power supply, TDP value is equal or less, the PCH supports it, and Apple's EFI (BIOS) is also a factor here.

I assumed you would want the newer chip not the older (intro'ed 7 months earlier). If you spend the time reviewing the questions here you'll see others have attempted and where not successful.

As an example Core i7-4790K CPU installation in EMC 2639

Solução escolhida

IFIXIT did a teardown of this series iMac Intel 27" Retina 5K Display Teardown If you jump down to Step 8 you'll see the CPU is socketed.

But! Switching out the CPU in this series is limited to what Apple used (i7-6700K)

The newer CPU's used in the newest 27" iMacs (i7-7700, i7-7700K) need a different PCH and the i7-4790k is just not possible.

Thanks for your reply!

I changed the CPU in another IMAC 5K LATE 2014...it can be done because the CPU is sockered!!Works very well!!

But i don't know if is the same in MID 2015 because that specific model was not upgradeable by apple....

The logic board is the same, but I think the CPU is soldered down.......only for MID2015 model.

Anyone can confirm that ???

Thanks

Cheers

So far all of the 27" iMac's have socketed CPU's so thats not the issue here.

The 21.5" models low end models have soldered CPU's. Which I think is your confusion.
