Keyboard types odd characters

Hi all, I actually have an Asus X550CA

My Keyboard is typing odd characters...

Examples, first is lowercase and then upper case holding shift down.

  • Pressing the L key types /l and /L
  • Pressing the C key types c. and C>
  • Pressing the # key types +\ and +|
  • Pressing the \ key types < and >
  • Pressing the . key types c. and C>
  • Pressing the down arrow key types - and - (no change with the shift key)
  • Pressing the 9 key types .9 and ( (with shift key it types correctly)
  • Pressing Shift + 3 key types #
  • Pressing . on the numpad key types .9
  • Pressing 2 on the numpad key types 2o
  • Pressing / on the numpad key types /l and /L
  • Pressing + on the numpad key types +\ and +|

I think that's it, this happens in windows and it happens in a linux mint live CD. I've also tried a few other linux distro's but the results are the same.

Has anyone else seen this behaviour?

I would have thought this pretty much points to a faulty keyboard but would like to hear your views.

Hi,

Have any liquids been spilled onto the keyboard?

Try a USB keyboard and check that it works OK.

Here is a link to an Asus part finder website for your model laptop.

Click on the keyboard entry then scroll to find your particular variant.

This is not a recommendation to use this supplier. It is shown to give an idea of the cost of the part. Search online using the appropriate keyboard part number only to find suppliers that may suit you better.

Here is a link to a video that shows how to replace the keyboard.

Hopefully this is of some help

This is a donated laptop because my friend bought a new one and i set the new one up for her and she gave me the laptop. She assures me there were no spillages and I cannot see any signs of that anyway. I did actually disassemble the laptop and removed the keyboard from the top assembly, it had the usual plethora of crumbs which I removed but it still behaved the same. I have found the keyboard unit on eBay and ordered one for £8 so worth a punt.

I've also bought a second SATA HDD caddy @ £3 to go in place of the CD-ROM as I never use CD's - they're so 90's lol

External keyboard works ok, so its either a faulty keyboard or something more serious. If the new keyboard doesn't work i think this machine will be a parts seller.

Thanks for the tips, I missed the external keyboard test :-)

Hi,

If the replacement keyboard works and if you can, go that bit further and install an SSD as the main drive and move the HDD into the caddy as the storage drive, up the RAM to 8GB and you'll have a flyer!

The keyboard is working now, I had to replace it.

The keyboard is fixed onto the upper chassis via plastic hold points to stop it falling through, I had to replace the keyboard by breaking all of the plastic solder points which was a bit fiddly as I didn't want to break the chassis.

Fitting the new keyboard, I had to remelt all of the hold points to the chassis, I did that using a solder iron and used some of the keys from the old keyboard as additional solder, there are quite a few hold points so you have to be a bit patient but its doable. I suppose an easy method would be to buy the whole top chassis but I was tight and it only cost me a tenner plus some time.

I've typed this reply with the keyboard and no errors or weird characters, so, for a small amount of money and a bit of time I now have a fully working laptop, just got to install Linux and we are good to go.

if you have tried different OS's with the same results, it points to the keyboard so far.

I don't know if you can remove the keyboard and use an external keyboard and see if you have the same.

If so then there is something wrong with the motherboard.

otherwise replace the keyboard (before or after) you try the external keyboard.

order one with the option to return it in case the problem as i said comes from the motherboard.

Asus made some keyboards with the cable folded too tightly underneath, and over time they break internally. If this is the case, you need to order a new keyboard for the laptop. Especially if it does it on different operating systems.

It could be a bios setting, but more than likely the cable is damaged inside that attaches it to the motherboard.
