Voice Memo Microphone not working

Customer has brought in a device. The customers Voice Memo or snapchat if you attempt to record is just crackly. We have tried a Front Camera Flex & Powerflex (with rearmic built in) and still no sound. New earspeaker mesh also. Any suggestions please

There are 3 microphones in the iPhone.

  • The bottom microphone is for Voice Memo and phone calls. The other microphones serve as error cancellation
  • The (top) front microphone is used for FaceTime calls, Siri and selfie videos with the front camera (FCAM). The top back microphone serves as error cancellation
  • The (top) back microphone is used for videos with the rear camera (RCAM). The top front microphone serves as error cancellation

Make sure you update your device to the latest version of iOS and then try to isolate which microphone is not working properly by trying each individual microphone with the related apps above. If the issue affects more than one microphone, then it could be the Audio Codec IC on the logic board.

Anything at the logic board level will require micro-soldering so you would need to find a repair shop that offers those services.

i dont think this is an hardware issue.

iam on ios 11.4.1 iphone 6s

  • memo and 3rd party memo recorder r - just static sound
  • phone calls on speaker -fine
  • phone calls normal - fine
  • front cam - fine
  • backcam - fine

so the one and only thing not working is anything that ask for acess to microphone which is wierd.

I have the same problem except that phone calls fade out , i think it’s software because many users reported that they replace the mic and didn’t solve the problem

Hello! Seems like the microphone was damaged. Have you tried to replace it?

I have replaced the microphone flex at the bottom but it didn't help. The front and back video records the audio just fine. Sometimes the audio over a phone call also sounds like it's static. Have messed around wih the software to determine it's not a software related issue.
