Are you kidding! This is ridiculous. My old one, you simply opened , slipped in a new AA and off you went. If this is the case with the battery on the new headphones, I may return them.

You must desolder it. There is now a partial teardown guide that includes how to access the battery. Bose QuietComfort 35 PARTIAL Teardown

I’m not sure what type of battery to replace it with though.

I found a battery.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-7V-500-mAh-...

It’s the wrong shape, but I made a small hole for the wires in the side of the battery compartment, and I hotglued it just outside the compartment.

Unfortunately the battery light still stays on even when the headset is off.

I think there must be something in the firmware which turns on when a battery reaches end of life, and I don’t know how to reset that despite installing the new battery.

However, the headset turns on now and seems to charge correctly.

I’m going to see if I can reset the firmware somehow.

There doesn't seem to be any way to solve the battery light issue. If anyone works out a fix please post. I'll just live with it for now, it's not that big a deal.

Turns out they drain a significant amount of power in this mode.

So, I feel I should return to this and post my conclusions.

The Bose QC35 enters an end of life mode when the battery dies.

It's possible to replace the battery, though they seem to have done their best to make this as difficult as possible by using an obscure battery shape which is not available to the public.

Upon replacing the battery the end of life mode persists. This means that the headset cannot be turned off, so if you charge it one day, it will be dead by the time you return to use it again.

This made it unusable for my purposes, and I still have it lying around in the hope that I can solve this £350 albatross they have lumbered me with.

I have thought about hacking in a hard on off switch into the power line, which would make them usable again. This will be a total ballache, but I may do this out of spite.

This behaviour is frankly disgusting, and not only should they be ashamed, but this should be illegal. They will offer to take the headset off your hands and give you a discount off another one, but we know what that means. It means they will at best "recycle" the electronics and at worst burn it, send it to an underdeveloped country, or just landfill it.

I will never buy a Bose product again, and I tell everyone to buy the Sony alternative, because it has a replaceable battery.
