I have the same redflashing HDMI , trying to push the enter and power … but it still just blinking and noting else happend to the display? Some one has a another tips or idea? Maya

I just fixed mine with the same issue. The holding of the Advanced Surround button and Power button for five seconds reset the error, but a few seconds later it came back. So I ended up opening the unit up and replacing the short little HDMI cable connecting the front input board to the main HDMI board. This fixed the problem. Seems the way it was twisted in there damaged it over time and it needs replacing. Everything works as it should now. My model was a VSX-1023.

@mchico33 Is that a type of cable I can find on Amazon or do I need to find a specialty store? Josh

Josh,...these are tricky HDMI problems to trace down. The cables are one possible cause - but you have to experiment to figure out which cable... or no cable and its something else. So before you do the expensive cable replacement approach, try pushing the existing cable on to the top internal upper board edge a few times. Does it seem loose? If that's not loose, it can easily be a cable at the back of the machine that is loose and causing the glitch. Try new cables back there if you have those installed. If you take them all off in the back... does the problem go away on a Reset? Good luck!

Josh, you can test this with any HDMI cable you have around the house. It doesn't have to be a very short cable just to test things out. They are standard connectors inside the receiver. If this fixes your problem you can order a short little 6-12" HDMI cable from anyplace online and just swap that in. Just try and avoid a cable that has a thick cable cover as part of the cable may have to lay into slots in the electronic boards in the receiver, and they can be a tight fit.

@rdbob, try to clear the error first. Plug the unit in and with the HDMI light flashing, press the power and the advanced surround button simultaneously and hold this combination for 5 seconds to clear the error.

Should this not clear the error, you will have to open up your receiver and see if there is any visual damage. Consider changing the HDMI board.

Re VSX 523: Had same hdmi red flashing light. I did as you suggested, unplugged, replugged and pressed power and advanced surround for several seconds. The unit came back with a display cable/Sat for a couple seconds, then back to dark with red hdmi flashing. I had same result twice. Prior to totally failing, the audio progressively got more more frequent one second outages. That's all I got. I appreciate all the posts and help.

Can you show me a pic of the Cable you are talking about

Thank you for the great info. Tried the reset it worked for around 4 seconds then it would fail again. Tried a few more times same result. Took it apart and pulled out the short HDMI cable. It looked fine. Blew out the inside of the unit and the cable connections. Reconnected the cable turned the unit on and it's working now. Thank you again.

Related issues with HDMI have to do with the quality of the HDMI physical connections. These are mostly at the back of the top HDMI board on most Pioneer units. If you remove the top cover (side and back screws hold it on, then lift the back up, and pull up and out toward the back), you will see the top board.

You will see one HDMI cable going frontwards. Another responder here noted his HDMI connection was loose there. Try to tighten up that connection.

The side connections to that board are critical too. If the side connections are not tight, you may lose audio outputs. Try to pull those out and push back in.

If your HDMI signals ate noisy or HDMI video fails, I have also had to remove the top board to slightly re-compress the back HDMI surround ground shield. When an outer metal connection jacket gets bent open, the HDMI internal pins may lose good contact. The external shields can be gently compressed with a settable clamp, or pliers (the ViceGrip brand has an adjustable bolt in back to limit the jaws distance, and works well). Be very careful not to break any of the tiny soldered components under or near those back HDMI ports. Then reassemble the top board into the chassis and be very sure the side connectors are well inserted.

With luck, your Pioneer receiver will be fully operational and it's audio and HDMI back to full function.

This worked for me:

On Pioneer receivers, you unplug the unit, fully powering it down.

Plug it back in, but do not power it up yet.

On the front panel, find the button marked “Enter”. Depending on unit, this may be a single isolated button or a bar type button along a line of such bars.

Press in the Enter button and while holding that depressed, push the ON power button. Hold these in for several seconds, then release the Enter button.

You should see the “Reset [Yes]” type question. You can toggle between Yes and No with front panel Up and Down buttons. With Yes showing, press the Enter button to reset the entire receiver.

This clears errors in the HDMI, and also any other setting errors that you may have.

Best of luck —- Michael

I have the same problem with my receiver and the most common culprit always seems to be your HDMI cable so what I did was I unplugged my HDMI cable with my unit on and the TV on plugged it back in and my picture and audio came back like it never happened always check your HDMI cable if it's old worn out or not securely in order and you might want to replace it

Have a VSX 43 Elite. w/ same issue. ( Blue flashing HDMI light). Unplugged receiver power cord. Plugged it back in and pressed the Power and Advanced Surround button together for 5 seconds Same issue. Tried the same maneuver 3 - 4 times and it came back up and worked but with crackling sound through the center channel speaker. This finally went away, about 10 - 15 seconds and now it works fine. Will see how it works the the next time. Not sure why this worked but it did. Like others, think it might also be an HDMI cable issue. Hope this helps.
