What processor do you have currently? What kind of duties would the server be doing?

any computer can be a server. Corporate servers are just high end computers (with purpose built hardware) with massive resources and redundancies. If you are looking to host game servers then RAM should be the main thing to look at. Let us know your intentions and we will be able to better answer your question :)

I have an hp pavilion a810n with a 64bit amd processor. I mainly want to know my options. I have a MacBook Pro, I want to either parent-child the hp to run Windows related programs, storage, personal email server, or...

I'm looking to see what's possible. It's still a good functional machine, so I don't want to trash it. I'd rather recycle it and give it a new life.

Plus, I'm also a turbo junky, so I would like to see what the upgrade/max out capabilities are. It currently has a 160gb hdd and 512 ram. From what I understand the current processor can handle up to 2bg, with no notable limits on hard drive size. What are the possibilities?

Thanks for whatever info/input suggestions

Hi, What is the motherboard that is in the PC?

Apparently HP used 3 different motherboards in the Pavillion 700,

2 x Asus, (stingray and explorer 2) TriGem (glendale).

They all ahve max of 2GB RAM but the CPU might be different

here is a link.

If you can simply tell me the processor, I can figure out which motherboard you have and provide upgrade options. Also, if you can go to device manager on Windows and tell me your current hard drive model, I can figure out if the hard drive is Sata or IDE.

Yes. But it depends on what you want to use the server for.

I have used old computers for that before. Then i used different Linux OS.

That's about what I started with a few years ago with Linux on it.

The CPU can use more than 2GB of Ram looks more like the motherboard is the limiter here. I do not think it is possible to use more than 2GB of RAM but if you can borrow ram from a friend you could always see if 4GB would work.

The CPU looks like a AMD 64 3300+ that should work well as a CPU for your server.

Your best bet is to upgrade ram to max 2gb, then upgrade the hard drive to an SSD or Hybrid SSD.
