Proximity Sensor after screen replacement

Hello!

I just had my LG G5's screen replaced after it got cracked. However, now as soon as I dial a call, the screen goes black (locks itself). Similarly, if I am making a call on whatsapp, as soon as I dial the call the Whatsapp screen locks itself!

I understand that this might have something to do with a proximity sensor? The person who repaired the screen for me has no idea about how to fix this unfortunately so I am a bit stuck here.

Anyone else faced similar issues? I have tried resetting the phone as well as calibrating the sensors.

Would appreciate some assistance.

Thank you.

a possible cause might be the lack of a little plastic piece that holds the proximity sensor on to the screen, ensuring it measures the distance from what's beyond the glass rather then the glass istself. here i post some pics of the piece. check if you left it on the old frame!

Thanks! I totally missed that little rubber plug and the other one on the opposite side of the speaker assembly. Popped both of them over to the new screen and it works like a charm! Thanks for the pics.

Had the same problem after screen replacement. Added the rubber from old screen to new screen. Now proximity sensor works like it should.

You can check if the sensor is working by AID64 app. In the app, a functioning proximity sensor must show 5 cms when you are not blocking the sensor.

Hi,

The problem is definitely connected to the proximity sensor.

Two common problems occur after/during a screen replacement.

1. The distance between the proximity sensor en the new screen must be 'none' because any light leaking onto the proximity sensor* will give a false positive and your screen will go blank as it should when you put it to your ear. This happens on all android phones, basic setting is screen off, as with the iPhone's the basis setting keeps the screen on. What’s better is another discussion ;))

2. As Recardozo90 said, some android phones, like LG, Samsung, etc. have a small rubber piece, keeping the proximity sensor in place, and pressed to the screen.

You can check the first by pressing a little on the top off the screen, pushing it down into the housing. gently, you don't want to crack your screen. If the screen has the slightest room to wiggle up and down, the screen isn’t placed properly into the housing. If so press the screen down and dial your voicemail, the screen will probably stay on (unless you covered the sensor) and will go blank as soon as the screen lifts a little from the housing.

The second is pretty easy, as the old housing/frame of the old screen will probably still hold the rubber piece.

With regards, Brenda

  • the proximity sensor has an infrared light, right next to the sensor, that sends out a beam and if reflected on to the sensor it detects your face/ear and the screen goes blank. If the beam reflect on the back off your new screen, the sensor gets a false positive

Thanks is the proximity sensor on the back of the case ? are is it on the front of the case where the screen side is? we bought what we thought was a proximity sensor to replace the old one with, but it did not help... we changed the screen cause it was cracked but we bought the whole front piece with the screen on it cause that was easier to change that way.. but since day one of changing it over to the new one, every time now we try and make a call or receive a call the screen goes black till we click on the power button to bring the screen back from dark to where we then can see who is calling...etc.

could we of left off something that makes the proximity sensor work from changing the front case with the screen ? but if is the back part of the case where the power button is that has the sensor then we did not mess with anything there to cause this problem... here is a photo of the one we bought to make sure this is the proximity sensor..... And also people keep mentioning a rubber piece that holds the sensor into place where is that rubber piece located at.... And again thank you for your help it sure is appreciated ..

In almost all cases ;) the proximity sensor is behind the screen, above the LCD unit. The unit is sometimes situated on the motherboard, or is a flex cable connected to the motherboard. So, you will have to check the teardown (all devices are found right here on ifixit) to see where it is located for your device.

Some devices have a rubber piece, some don't, so again check the detailed pictures found here, so you can see how it is placed in the housing/behind the screen.

What proximity sensor does is that it tries to recognize - yet not always right - when you hold your phone next to your ear, so that the phone will lock (turns on the black screen), then you won't accidentally press keys with your cheek when talking to other people on the phone. Once you're done with your conversation & remove the phone from your ear, the sensor is then supposed to unlock your screen & allow you to end the call.

This makes sense in theory, however in my case I had my phone laying flat on the desk, nowhere close to my ear. Or holding in my hand but had it on a speaker. Still it locks (black screen). Very inconvenient feature if you ask me, as I had a great difficulty activating my new credit card while unable to enter the numbers. I wish there was a way to disable this. Argh LG.

I ran a proximity test on the phone. Was holding my hand over the top of the display while making a call, and then the screen locks. Remove hand and it unlocks. This means that the proximity sensor is working. So far so good, now am searching high & low as to how to disable said sensor or change the distance. Very frustrating.

A temporary solution to hold my hand over the screen while it locks helps to unlock. It however locks up again, then I repeat Step 1. Oh well.

I looked on my old screen frame and bingo, the rubber was still there and had not been transfered to the new screen - as soon as I added it to the new frame, the issue resolved straight away.

Excellent advice and images helped me locate the rubber…. so many thanks.

I replaced the rubber piece for the front proximity sensor and the sensor still did not work. BUT, I did notice the screen front top was starting to pull away from the other layers. I carefully used super glue on the edges to reattach the the top layer to the lower layers, and sure enough the proximity sensor is working well again. Obviously there are many ways the proximity sensor can be made dis-functional.
