WD my passport hard drive is not working

when tried to mount my WD hard drive to pc( windows 10) , i have been asked to format the desk in order to use it. This happens eventhough i have plentty of files stored on it. mateer of fact this happens nearly 3 years before.yestedray when tried to connect it again to get some needed files it seems like it formates itself. i once heared that we can still retrieve our old data even after formatting. please, let me know the possibility of retirieving my data from hard drive device.

Hello Hash. I know it’s been a long time but I am suffering the same issue now. I have sent my 4TB WD My Passport to many places and they have determined that my drive is unrecoverable, unfortunately. I had used 2.8 TB of data on there, and it just disappears. But I feel like there is a way to get it back. I just don’t know how.

If it’s a WD Ware drive, you may be screwed. The encryption key is stored on the SATA->USB bridge and it’s usually what fails when they die and has the potential to prevent software recovery. The issue is there is NO WAY to disable this AND unless the company can bypass it by brute forcing the drive (or PCB repair, which is your only option to save the data unless you can find an exact replacement that works to open for the good USB bridge board to have a chance otherwise), the data is as good as gone. It sucks, I know. Once you recover (or realize it’s not going to happen), build an external drive and you will not have to deal with this crap if the USB bridge fails. You’re double screwed on the 2.5” series since they build the encrypting USB bridge ONTO THE HARD DRIVE PCB. Unless specifically confirmed, assume ANY 2.5” USB3 WD external drive has the USB bridge integrated onto the bare drive.

If it’s pre-WD Ware, you can remove the drive and put it in an enclosure or use an external cable; your choice. All of the data will be there if it’s not a dead hard drive. These can even be easily recovered.
