Trackpad does not register when pressed. It it the trackpad? A swelling battery? How can you tell which it is? The mouse clicks fine; the trackpad works OK other than registering clicks. If it's the trackpad, can it be cleaned, or does it need replacing? If it's a swelling battery, which works fine otherwise, is there a fix besides replacing it?

You maybe able to adjust the click plate depression to offset things. Here is a view of the bottom side of the Upper Case Trackpad on the left side you'll see a triangle piece of the case sticking inwards with a large silver screw head flush with the case this is the adjustment screw. Now look at this IFIXIT guide to take the battery out: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2012 Battery Replacement which will allow you access to the adjuster.
If you place the battery on a known flat surface you might be able to tell if it's blistering. You could also look at your batteries health using this free gem: coconutBattery.
