Yes. The 2G goes up to 4.2.1 max.
What version of the OS is on the iPod? You can check by going under settings, general and then you know.
Depending on the firmware, you may need to pay at least 4.95 for the firmware. if you don't want to, you can download the old version if you want to.
Note: This 4.95 fee may no longer be true. It was when I put the answer up.
