Introdução
This guide will walk you through how to assemble your own Inkerface for your Steam Machine, and will primarly focus on the assembly process. Flashing Valve's custom firmware will be covered in the conclusion of this guide, and building the AppImage will be covered in a future guide. This project does require some soldering skills. If you've never soldered before, consider taking a look at our guide on How to Solder and Desolder Connections.
Required Hardware
- 1 x 5.83" eInk Panel
- 1 x Adafruit eInk Breakout
- 1 x ESP32-S3 Feather w/ 2MB PSRAM (Both the V1 Board of the V2 modules work, but they will have different pinouts)
- 1 x LP803860 Battery
- 4 x K&J Magnetics SB443-OUT Magnets
- 13 x M2.6 x 5mm Machine Screws (Can be bought through McMaster or Amazon)
3D Printed Parts
3D print the following parts with either PETG filament or ABS with a layer height of 0.2 mm and 20-30% infill. For best results enable ironing on all top layers.

Position your breakout board with the connector on the underside and facing towards the opening on the left-hand side of the Board Plate.

Position your Feather module of choice with the USB-C connector on the underside and facing the opening on the right-hand side of the Board Plate.

Once you have your boards positioned, secure your boards to the plate with 4 M2.6 x 5mm Machine Screws.

Using 30 AWG wire with solicone insulation, solder your connections to your board according to the wiring diagrams shown above.

If you are using Feather Board V1, use the first wiring diagram.

If you are using Feather Board V2, use the second wiring diagram.

Remove the protective film from the eInk panel and place the panel in the matching recess in the faceplate.

Once your eInk display is placed in the faceplate, drop in your left and right Midplates and insert your 4 K&J SB443-OUT magnets into the four slots in the midplates.

Carefully position your Board Plate so that the wires connecting your eInk Breakout board and your Feather board fit into the channel between the Mid Plates

Mount your board plate using 8 M2.5 x 5mm screws.

Carefully route your battery cable under the board plate and up next to the battery connector on the Feather Board.

Place your battery in the cutout created by the Board and Mid Plates.

Place the Battery Retainer over your battery and fix it in place with your last M2.5 x 5 mm screw.

Carefully unlatch the Lock Tab Connector on your breakout board and feed the flex cable into the connector, and lock it into place with the tab.

Carefully connect your battery to your Feather Board. The LEDs on the board should light up.

Congradulations! The assembly of your Inkerface is now complete! The last thing you will need to do is flash Valve's custom firmware to the Feather Board. Valve has made the firmware publicly available on their Gitlab page, and Valve highly recommends using PlatformIO and running the following commands to install the firmware...

If you have a _V1_ feather: pio run -e featherv1 -t upload
Or if you have a _V2_ feather: pio run -e featherv2 -t upload
Regardless of the board you’re using, you’ll need to physically connect it via USB and grant permission to interact with serial devices on your system.
