If you own one of these laptops, it is likely you need this guide because your current battery is too weak (common i7 spec problem) or the battery in your system is worn out. This guide will show you how to replace the battery in the E6540.

Note: If you have a slice battery installed, this will need to be removed first.

Along with battery replacement instructions, this guide will show you where the Windows 7 COA on these laptops is placed. If you are not using Dell SLIC installation media, this key will be required. This is not required for Windows 8.1 Pro systems since the key is stored in the BIOS and the only sticker is a tamper evident one on the service panel.

  1. If you hibernate your system: Start the hiberation process and let your system do what it needs to. It will shut off once finished. Sleep mode: Select Sleep and the computer will be done relatively quickly. However, the power adapter will need to be plugged in.

Extended runtime batteries are about 1/3 larger then standard batteries. These will stick out of the system. Remove the battery from the computer. Pull the battery up from the back of the battery, and set the battery aside.
