it's been irritating to carry a type-D cable with me everywhere I go, and I've been wondering if I can just change the port type on my phone or am I better off using a small converter ?

It won't fit on the place of motherboard. You can buy portable type c to micro (it's not type D) converter and carry it with yourself to solve the problem.
