Known as the ''PS2'', it is a sixth-generation video game console first released by Sony in Japan in March 2000. The United States saw it later in 2000 with the SCPH-30000. Repair of this device requires only common tools, but can get tricky.

Fat PS2 video issue

Hello, I have a ps2 model SCPH-30001 that is giving me some issue. The ps2 works good until you turn it off then back on, after you turn it back on it doesn't show any video but the audio still works (using an hdmi adapter) If I use just the av cable without the hdmi adapter it works like normal till I turn it off and on. Then I don't get any video or audio. If I turn it off and leave it off for a while it'll start working again till I turn it off and on. Any help is appreciated, thank you in advance!

Hi there!

That is a weird issue. Especially that it works fine if you don't turn the PS2 off.

For now, I keep thinking about the CMOS battery somehow. I would replace this one and see how it goes!

Also advising you to clean everything inside the PS2 and also the AV port.

There is no specific guide for replacing the CMOS battery unfortunately.

You can follow the teardown > Sony PlayStation 2 Teardown - iFixit (step 15 if the CMOS battery is located next to the drive. If it's next to the drive, you do NOT need to completely disassemble it. You can just replace the battery only. Just taking the top cover off is enough already to access the CMOS battery).

If it's not located next to the drive (which is most of the time), then it's directly on the motherboard... And you most likely want to follow this tear down: PlayStation 2 Teardown - iFixit (in Step 23 you can see the battery on the motherboard).

Please let us know how it goes!

Just replaced the CMOS battery and it still has the same issue. I did also spray the inside of the AV port with B100. I looked over the boards while it was apart and didn’t noticed anything that looked damaged.

Hmm alright. Did you also tried another AV cable? Just to be sure. It could be the GPU... But this one cannot be replaced that easy unfortunately. Hopefully a new AV cable will make it work. Would try that as the next step.

Tried 2 different cables. Such a strange issue, it’s crazy that it works perfectly if I play for a few hours then the second I turn it off it won’t display again till it rested for awhile. Even if I turn it on for 1 minute then off and back on it’ll show no display

It's a strange issue... Never saw this before. It must be motherboard related somehow. Did you checked the motherboard? Is it all OK? Can you share some pictures with us?

Did you ever get this issue resolved? I am having the same problem with my fat Ps2
