Internet connects most of the time but not always

Ok, I seem to have a little problem with it. Sometimes when I turn it on it boots up fine, no chime but I have the sound muted. When I go to launch firefox (newest one) it never loads. My airport menu (thingy at the top of the menu bar) says I have a full signal (the airport express and iMac are less than 20 feet away from each other). Same thing with Safari. Everything else still works, i.e. xbox 360, MacBook, wii, and an iPod touch, at the same time. Sometimes it works right the first time but other times it will not work at all. Restarting and turning it off then back on doesn't help either. I have to turn it off for over 30 minutes then try again and it always works after that. Any ideas?

I fixed it, i just needed to reset the SMC, or whatever you reset by unplugging it, holding the power button for 5 seconds, then turning it back on. Thanks for the help!

Sounds to me like a heat problem. When you first boot up will Firefox run then? If it fails to load, trash it and download a new one, you may have gotten a corrupted version. Do this first before things heat up. Next we will try to determine what part is failing. Patience will win the day here.

Firefox does load, as does safari but the webpages will not load, you see what I mean? When I first turn it on none of thetemps, according to istat pro, are above 100F. After a while though the airport card hovers around 140F. This is just browsng the web and possibly teamspeak and the demo for halo:combat evolved

(I am not allowed to take apart this computer as I am only 15, but I am also the most computer litterate person in my household. Also, somehow, my dog opened the drawer where I stashed the restore disks and she ate them so I can't restore it)

Ps- when it is working, fire fox and safari are fast. I tried using network utility to ping a website (10 pings to yahoo.com) but it just says it fails. I have checked it for viruses and there are none, and netbarrier is set for "no-rules"

You can call Apple and get the restoration disks for, usually $15. If the browsers are loading but you can't get pages to load, then you you don't have an internet connection. From the time you start up, till the time it quits, takes how long? What is your warranty status?

I have Internet connection because the airport thingy at the top menu bar says I have a full connection. As for the Warranty status it is still under AppleCare for another year. When the iMac is not connecting everything else does. I cannot create this problem at will as it happens randomely, at times it won't load webpages from when I first start it up and at others it will stop working as I am using it.

Ps- I used speed test Nd got a result if like 27kilobytes download and 117 upload speed, the MacBook gets a result of 799download and 500 upload,give or take depending upon time, day, and weather(we have netnitco wireless broadband so there is a radio dish on top of the house)

Time to take it in for a warranty fix. The airport or some other component is overheating and disconnecting you.

I have the same exact problem as you, except that the 2 accounts i use on my intel core duo iMac will not connect to the internet at all, yet it does connect on the computer administrator account. It also shows that the wifi bar has a full internet connection. None of my browsers work or online games. none at all. it just says cannot connect to server. any tips on this?
